Hope you had an enjoyable Passover or Easter! Time spent relaxing with friends and/or family is a great way to rejuvenate. But, remember to make the most of these next few months before those lazy Summer days set in.

My apologies for publishing this newsletter late this month, I had a virus on my computer last week which put us way behind schedule. Before I tell you about this issue, I want to share some exciting news: I was pleased to be included the April issue of Entrepreneur magazine. Since books are so important to me, it was a pleasure to offer advice on how to establish reading at the office.

In this issue, the focus is "Conveying The Right Message." Whether you're a "rookie" or seasoned professional developing stronger communication skills always will help your career. How to Use Power Phrases, To say what you mean, Mean what you say & Get what you want

Power Up Your Communication

Being able to communicate effectively is one of the keys to success. If you’ve been having trouble getting your point across, without ruffling too many feathers, I have a fabulous book for you: How to Use Power Phrases, To say what you mean, Mean what you say & Get what you want by Meryl Runion.

Over the last several years, I’ve read many books on communication; this book is one of the best. Runion’s clear, concise and friendly style makes reading this book more like talking with an advisor who has your best interests at heart.

How to Use Power Phrases begins by explaining the power of making brief statements. She also discusses the power of being nice which is something that many of us regularly forget. In each chapter, she uses everyday examples to illustrate the right way and the wrong way to handle numerous tricky situations including:

  • responding to put-downs
  • communicating feelings
  • apologizing without groveling
  • and expressing anger

One of my favorite chapters covers a stumbling block for many: How to say no without feeling guilty OR alienating our friends and colleagues. Runion describes a three step, or three sentence process, which includes an Acknowledgement such as “I would if I could,” followed by a brief Clarification like “I’m already committed,”  and finishing with a Tag Phrase to reinforce your relationship for instance “Maybe next time.”  Following this process allows you to communicate “No” without making the other person wonder why they asked in the first place.

Whatever you’re doing professionally improving your communication skills can help you be more successful. Pick up a copy today. It’s the perfect sunny afternoon read.

What you need to know to get the job

By Carole Martin

What is Behavioral Interviewing?

This is an interviewing technique employers use to determine whether you are a good fit for the job. This is accomplished by asking questions that pertain to your past behavior. The information gained through this technique is used as an indicator of your future success. In other words, the answers you give about your past experiences will be used to predict your future performance - if you did it before you could do it again! Read More

How to make criticism constructive not destructive

By Annette Richmond

Dealing with criticism can be tricky. Whether you're on the giving or receiving end you'll need to choose your words carefully. What you say, and how you say it, can mean the difference between improved performance and bitter resentment.

While giving criticism is probably not high on your list of favorites, there are times when you'll need to give someone on your staff a nudge in the right direction. One of the keys to getting the results you want is to make your remarks more palatable. Read More
