Editor's Notes

Greetings! Welcome to our new subscribers and thanks to our many long-timer readers for helping us grow. I’m happy to say that The Career Intelligencer now goes out to over 1200 subscribers. Thanks for your continued support.

Last week, I attended the Catalyst awards conference. What a treat. I spent the day with women from across the country, women who are making a difference in their workplace. Next month, I’ll share some of what I learned with you.

The focus of this issue is Transitions. If you’ve been thinking about making a career change, take a look at our Spotlight, Do What You Are by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger. Job searchers will find some tips on making the most of a job interview in The In’s and Out’s of Interviewing by our career-planning expert, Amy Ertel. And if you have a problem with um’s and ah’s you’ll find some help in How to Cure the Verbal Virus.

On a somewhat lighter note, if you’re having trouble navigating through this year’s spring fashions, pick up some advice in Spring Into Fashion. Knowing what to wear is sometimes tricky. But, you can step out in style with a little help from our professional image consultant, Sherry Maysonave.

Wherever you work, remember that Thursday, April 25th is Take Our Daughters to Work Day. If you don’t have a daughter, you can still be a mentor. For more information visit the Ms. Foundation for Women sponsored site.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Different Drummers

Are you happy in your current career? Or do you feel like you’re missing something, but you’re not sure exactly what? If this sounds like you, you’d probably benefit from exploring personality type. It can help explain why people like to do different things and sometimes have trouble communicating.

If you’re curious, about your personality type and how it may affect your career satisfaction, I recommend taking a look at Do What You Are, Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type, by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger. It’s a great resource whether you know your Myers-Briggs Type or not.

Click for Details

Do What You Are describes the different dimensions of personality type. It can help you understand things like why you prefer to work independently, in a quiet setting. Or why you need to have lots of interaction with others during the day.

An engaging read, Do What You Are is full of real-life scenarios, which make the information personally relevant and easy to understand. It lists careers each of the sixteen MBTI® types might find enjoyable. And provides insight into what each type needs in a job to achieve satisfaction. For more information

Reach Your Goals

Want to be more successful?

One of the secrets to being successful is setting goals.

But, while most of us know it’s important to set goals, few of us know how.

That’s where our new goal-setting workbook comes in. In it you’ll find step-by-step instructions on what to do and how to do it. Published by career-intelligence.com, LLC. Look for it later this month.

Tips to help you make the most of your next interview

By Amy Ertel

When I was asked to write this article on interviewing skills, I was thrilled. The subject of interviewing is one of my favorite career development topics. Interestingly, my advice to job seekers is usually the same regardless of their job aspirations or industry – start by developing a sales pitch for yourself.

Regardless of their situation, my suggestion is "If you were a product, what would you say to make a customer want to buy you?" The employer is the customer and you are the product so it is up to you to close the deal. Read more

Making sense of the spring runway

By Annette Richmond & Sherry Maysonave

Everything old is new again. There’s nothing like the pages of a fashion magazine to illustrate that line. As I browsed through the spring issues I felt like I was back in school again.

Looking at the peasant blouses, charm bracelets, ruffled shirts and little floral dresses brought back fond memories of the 60’s and 70’s. If I only had kept my clothes and my dress size, I’d be right in style today.

While I’m hardly a fashionista, I think fashion is a lot of fun. Unfortunately, much of the trendy, fun stuff is not appropriate for a business environment. At least not if you want your boss and colleagues to take you seriously. Read more
