Editor's Notes

Greetings! It's tough to believe that Summer is almost over. But, it is. September is rapidly approaching which makes fall just around the corner.

While career often takes a backseat to fun in the Summer, it's time to begin thinking about business again. With this in mind, our issue focuses on Professional Image.

What does your appearance say about you? Does it reflect your abilities? Or sell you short? One of the quickest ways to get clients and colleagues to take you seriously is to take care of your appearance (What Do Your Clothes Say About You?).

Don't forget that professional image is about more than how we dress. What people think of us depends a great deal on how we communicate, which includes how others "see" us when we're on the phone. Make sure that you're sending the right message (Phone Etiquette 101).

Image also includes how you represent yourself to potential employers on paper. It's essential that your cover letter and resume present you in the best possible light, particularly, if you've been unemployed for awhile (Creating An Intransition Resume).

Despite our best attempts we all experience rough times: Times when our dreams seem to be beyond our grasp. When those times come often a little inspiration can help us move forward.

I hope that you've watched at least some of the Summer Olympics. The Olympic athletes never fail to inspire me with their dedication, determination and guts. Use the recommendations in this issue's Spotlight when you need a little inspiration in your life.

Speaking of Summer events, the Republican National Convention is just around the corner. Be informed. And please take a moment to answer our 2004 Election Poll. I'll fill you in on the responses in an upcoming issue. Thanks.

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Never Give Up

Did you watch the Men's Gymnastics All Around Competition? Me too. Paul Hamm's comeback from 12th place to winning the Gold Medal was absolutely amazing. The next day Hamm's performance became the inspiration for this Spotlight: Never give up.

We all go through tough times. We find that the new job isn't working out the way we planned. Or our career change is more difficult than we'd imagined. We may think of giving up.

That's when we need a little inspiration. And there's nothing like seeing someone else overcome overwhelming obstacles to make us realize that just maybe we can reach our goals too.

The next time you need a little inspiration, pick up one of these movies. All are based on true stories. With homage to the Olympics four revolve around sports. Despite this none are for men, or women, only.

Watch one today; it may change your tomorrow.

Erin Brockovich - As the movie's tagline says "She brought a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees." What they don't mention is that in the process she manages to transform her own life. And earn the respect she always wanted.

Miracle - Inspirational story about a group of hockey players who became the U.S. Hockey team and how they achieved a historic victory over their Soviet champion opponents at the 1980 Olympic Games. Almost like watching the real thing.

Music of the Heart - Based on a documentary, the film tells the story of a woman who manages to get her life back and achieve a lifelong dream. Along the way, she happens to change the lives of many of her students as well.

Remember the Titans - Based on the 1971 integration of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, it's the story of how an angry, resentful, intolerant group of guys becomes an undefeated championship team.

The Rookie - Uplifting, heartwarming story about not giving up your dreams. Jim Morris a 35 year-old father, teacher and high-school coach who becomes the oldest rookie in the major leagues.

Seabiscuit - Based on Laura Hillenbrand's captivating bestseller, the true story of a "runt" who defeated a champion. It's the story of second chances, overcoming adversity and never giving up. Inspirational every time you see it.

People still "See" you even when you're on the phone

By Annette Richmond

Do you think that people can't see you when you're talking on the phone? Wrong. You'd probably be surprised by how much you convey about yourself during a phone conversation.

We've all heard the old adage, what you say is not as important as how you say it. Studies show that this is true. The message we convey to others depends on a combination of our tone of voice, the words we speak and our personal presence. Read More

How to make sure they convey the right image

By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

One of the moms at my girls' summer camp ranks among the chicest women I know. With her dark hair pulled into a low ponytail, her Jackie-O sunglasses hiding her eyes, and the sleeveless tops that show off her well-toned arms, she looks like she stepped out of the pages of HARPER'S BAZAAR. Yet at the same time, there's an air of unfussiness about her, as if her appearance is the last thing on her mind.

Then there's another mom I know who usually looks like a rumpled bed. Unkempt hair, no makeup, ill-fitting, non-descript clothes - she too gives the impression that her appearance is the last thing on her mind. Read More
