Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! Whether you're spending two weeks in Europe or a long weekend at the beach, I hope that you're taking some time for yourself this summer. Taking a break will improve every area of your life. With this in mind, we have decided to publish just one newsletter this summer. We'll be back on our regular schedule in September.

This issue is filled with a mix of ideas and information. There's advice on how to get out of the office early (Doing More With Less). You'll also find tips on how to maintain a professional image as the weather heats up ( How to Dress Professionally in the Summer Heat ), lessons on exercising your leadership muscles ( The Ten Traits of Legendary Leaders ) and advice on managing your diet ( The After Dinner Craze ).

Browse my Summer Reading List for some poolside reading suggestions. Mix one or two of these business books in between the latest novels and you’ll be ahead of your competition come fall. And make sure you do a little networking at the next family get together or neighborhood barbecue. You never know who knows who. Or where those relationships you develop this summer will lead.

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

See you in September!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Summer Reading 2005

Happily those lazy, hazy days of summer are almost upon us. It’s time to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Time for days spent at the beach, by a pool or, one of my favorites, lazing in a hammock.

Everyone knows that career often takes a backseat to fun in the summer. But, don’t neglect yours completely. Before you leave for vacation, spend a little time shopping for books to take along. It never hurts to have that competitive edge.

Here are my summer reading recommendations. No snoozers made it to this list. (You know the ones that have great information but are dry as dust.) Each one is an engaging read that will entertain and inform you. I promise.

  • Conversationally Speaking, Tested New Ways to Increase Your Personal and Social Effectiveness, by Alan Garner Filled with easily recognizable, often humorous, examples, Conversationally Speaking is a must read for anyone who would like to improve his or her communication skills. (Includes a very helpful chapter on handling criticism.)
  • Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, by Susan Jeffers, can help you move past the fears that are stopping you from achieving your goals. A quick and informative read, filled with real-life examples of how Jeffers and others have managed to conquer their fears and realize their dreams.
  • Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career by Andrea R. Nierenberg A fast-reading, informative little gem, filled with practical advice and entertaining anecdotes delivered in Andrea’s warm, gracious style. Whatever your expertise, Nonstop Networking can take you to the next level. I know it taught me a thing or two.
  • On Writing Well, The classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction by William Zinsser, is a must read for anyone who writes and wants to be a better writer. Zinsser covers everything from eliminating the clutter in your writing to developing your voice.
  • Soul Proprietor, 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur, by Jane Pollak, is a gem. It’s like sitting with mentor who’s willing to share her success stories and her learning experiences. You know, the ones that didn’t quite turn out as planned. Fun and inspirational, a great read for every businesswoman.
  • Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types That Determine How We Live, Love and Work, by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen, is one of the best books about Type theory on the market. Warm and witty, this book is great for anyone who wants to better understand themselves and the people they work with.

Keep your cool while staying professional

By Diana Pemberton Sikes

As the weather heats up and the lazy days of summer saunter into the northern hemisphere, the call of the outdoors becomes so strong some mornings that it's hard to drag yourself into the office, let alone dress appropriately enough to conduct business. But before you succumb to the urge to go totally casual - even if your office has a summer casual dress policy - remember that what you wear has a HUGE impact on how you're perceived. Warm weather doesn't change that.

Your main goal should always be credibility. You don't have to dress down to stay cool. You just need a few tried-and-true solutions to help you fight the heat yet keep your authority intact. Here are some guidelines: Read More
