Editor's Notes

Where were you when the lights went out? Here in Connecticut, we lose power fairly often. Usually, it's only a brief inconvenience. As you know, last Thursday proved different for us and 50 million of our neighbors in the Northeast.

We were among the lucky ones. While we remained in the dark for several hours with a screened porch, gas grill, candles and a portable radio we were fairly comfortable. With all the local lights out, we even had the opportunity to see Mars.

Part of the reason we were "lucky" was because we were prepared. This also is true when it comes to careers. You have a better chance of being "lucky" if you are prepared. I'll be talking more about this as we get back to business this fall.

In this issue, the focus is on Transition. Today lots of people are out of work. If you've been unemployed for several months you need to be ready to address the subject during a job interview (Why Has It Taken You So Long To Find A Job?). If you've been down and running on empty try a little attitude adjustment (A Little Inspiration Goes A Long Way). Finally, if you do lose your job, take some time to morn your loss, then try to focus on the up side (When You've Been Terminated And It's A Good Thing).

It's difficult to believe that soon it will be time to get back to business. I hope you've had a chance to relax a bit this summer. While we've been enjoying the break as well, we'll be back to publishing The Career Intelligencer twice a month come September.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-ntelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

Enjoy your summer! See you next month.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Face Your Fears

Nearly everyone I know is afraid of doing something. For some of us it's giving a speech. For others it's exchanging the security of one job for the uncertainness of a new position.

What about you? What are you afraid of? What fears are keeping you from achieving your dreams?

Whatever they are, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Susan Jeffers can help you move past your fears and get on with your life. Unlike many authors of self-help books, Jeffers doesn't placate us with empty platitudes. She gets right to the truth of the matter.

In chapter two, Can't You Make It Go Away? Jeffers states unequivocally that the only way to conquer your fear is to do whatever it is you're afraid of. Yes, things like positive self-talk and changing your attitude will increase your self-confidence. Which is a good thing. But, the only way to move past your fear is to take action.

Jeffers starts off by explaining Five Truths about Fear: 1) the fear will never go away as long as we continue to grow; 2) the only way to conquer fear is to do whatever you're afraid of doing; 3) the only way to feel better about ourselves is to just do it; 4) we're not the only ones afraid to try something new; and 5) overcoming our fears is easier than living with them.

Throughout the book, Jeffers shares lessons learned in the trenches. Real-life examples of how Jeffers and others have managed to conquer their fears and realize their dreams. A quick and informative read, Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, is guaranteed to help you get unstuck. And that's the first step to getting what you want.

What you should say on a job interview

By Carole Martin

It's difficult to believe that employers are still asking this type of question. Don't they read the newspapers or listen to the news? If they were informed, they would know the answer; i.e. jobs are very scarce and difficult to find these days, and unemployment is at an all time high since 1994 - in some areas reaching 14% - 30%. (California and Arizona)

Unfortunately, quoting these facts probably wouldn't get you a job offer and could even result in the interview ending rather quickly. So, what is the correct answer to give an interviewer when you're asked such a question? There is no "correct" answer. However, a technique that works well is to take the focus off the length of your job search and to place it on what you have to offer. Read More

Take two hours to adjust your attitude and jumpstart your career

By Annette Richmond, MA

Most of us look forward to those lazy, hazy days of summer. Sometimes we get lucky. Sometimes, particularly here in the Northeast, we get don't.

The next time Mother Nature rains on your parade don't despair. Instead view that that rainy summer Sunday as an opportunity to grow. Spend a couple of hours with a great movie and you just may change more than your afternoon. Read More
