Editor's Notes

Greetings! August marks our second year online and the beginning of our third year publishing The Career Intelligencer. I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we do putting it together. Because this is the vacation season, we’ll publish only one newsletter issue this month. Don’t worry, we’ll be back to publishing twice a month in September.

Already, this has been a rewarding summer for me. I was quoted in an article on listening skills in the August issue of Self Magazine. The fact that I subscribe to Self made it doubly exciting for me. Also, through a recent affiliation the Center for Healing & Recovery in Norwalk, CT, I am available for one-on-one coaching. I will also be giving seminars and MBTI workshops there this fall.

While I hope you are relaxing at least a little this summer, soon it will be time to get back to business. That’s why I decided to focus this issue on job transition. If you’re looking for a new position you’ll need the information in Where the Jobs Are. For tips on making connections read Networking 101 by Amy Ertel. And, if changing careers is your goal, pick up a copy of our Spotlight, Wishcraft by Barbara Sher.

Don’t forget to check out our What’s New section below. I guarantee Moms (and Dads) will get a chuckle from Summer’s Here by Dawn Rivers Baker. You’ll also find all new career planning, stress reducing and professional image advice from our experts.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Annette Richmond

Fulfilling Dreams

Lot’s of new career-planning titles hit the bookstores every year. Over the last few months, I recommended a few. And even created a workbook myself.

Still, there’s a lot to be said for those tried and true books that people have been reading and referring to for years. One of my favorites is Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want by Barbara Sher.

Wishcraft
Click for Details

Billed as a guide to making dreams come true, Wishcraft offers some practical advice on self-assessment, brainstorming, goal setting and finding that extra time to work towards your goal. The first half of the book is devoted to discovering what you want out of life. The second half provides advice on how to get it.

One of my favorite chapters is Barn-Raising. Based on the old-time tradition of pooling resources to build a home, this new version gets people together to build a dream. Sher suggests organizing Barn-Raising groups to brainstorm, create strategies, swap services and exchange contacts. Having a good time is a bonus.

As somewhat of a non-linear thinker, I also found Sher’s idea of using flow charts for brainstorming and goal planning extremely useful. Using a visual framework instead of a list provides a different perspective. And looking at anything in a new way is often just what’s needed.

If you’ve never read Wishcraft, put it on your reading list. If you’ve read it before, it may be time to read it again. You may just get some new ideas, like I did.

Job Search Strategies You Need to Know

By Annette Richmond

Just in case you didn’t know, summer is one of the worst times to look for a new job. My brief stint at an employment agency taught me two things. First, the job market is slow in the summer and during the holiday season (from Thanksgiving until New Years). Second, September and January are two of the best times for job hunters.

The holiday slump is no surprise everyone is too busy celebrating. Summer is slow because it’s synonymous with vacation. Many job seekers wait until they’ve taken the family on holiday to give notice. Most employers are taking time off too.

Job-wise, things generally open up in the fall. Which means now is a good time to start considering your career plans. If you don’t want to spend one more day with the boss from hell, develop a plan with multiple strategies. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Read more

Four ways to make better connections

By Amy Ertel

Networking is a funny concept. Many of my clients see networking as something that only really aggressive and outgoing people do well. The truth is that everyone networks. You probably network without even knowing it.

Every time you have a discussion with someone about your life whether it be that you are looking for a job or a day care center for your child or a health spa with good aerobics' classes, you are networking. In short, you are sharing information about yourself and the workings of your life.

However, there are ways to enhance your networking skills especially when attending an event designed for the purpose of networking. Read more
