Editor's Notes

Happy Holidays! With Thanksgiving falling late and Hanukkah starting early, the holidays have run together more than usual this year. I can barely believe that Christmas is less than three weeks away. And it’s less than one month to 2003. However you celebrate, I hope that you're spending the season surrounded by family and friends.

If New Year’s is a time for fresh starts, this is the time for reflection. December is the perfect time to evaluate the last twelve months. To think about what’s been working for you. And, take stock of what’s not. Year’s end is the time to assess where you are today and consider where you want to be next year (Reflections 2002).

December is also known as awards time. Recently, I heard a curmudgeon say that companies give awards because they’re cheaper than raises. But, I don’t believe that. I think getting an award is an honor. Unfortunately, being on the receiving end can be nerve racking. Because getting an award means you’ll need to give an acceptance speech (How Do You Accept an Award?).

Don’t forget to check out our What’s New section below for more articles (Don't Tell Me You Meant To!) and fresh advice from our experts. Pick up some tips on planning your weekend wardrobe from image expert Sherry Maysonave. Get some advice on revamping a bad reputation from career-planning expert Cindy Pucci.

Because of the holidays, we'll be publishing only one issue of The Career Intelligencer in December. Happy Holidays! See you in 2003.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Spotlight on Business: 2002 A Year in Reviews

Over the past two and one-half years I've read lots of career- and business-related books. Some of them have been entertaining and informative (my favorite combination). Others have not.

Those that I had trouble getting through; I've kept to myself. The best of the rest I've passed along to you through my Spotlight column. Because I love movies, I've included some of them too. In fact, I added a bonus from 2001 at the end of this ebook.

Readers have recommended some of the books I've read and reviewed. Others I've been lucky enough to stumble across online, at conferences and on bookstore shelves. If I haven't covered your suggestion yet, most likely it's only a matter of time. I'm just getting started on my reading for 2003.

Spotlight on Business: 2002 A Year in Reviews includes every review that's appeared on career-intelligence.com this year. Whether you're struggling to get ahead at the office or build your own business I think you'll find something here to inform and inspire you.

I hope you will find these reviews entertaining. Better yet, I hope these books and movies will help you improve your personal and professional lives.

Taking time to think about where you are

By Annette Richmond, MA

If New Year’s is a time of fresh starts, then year’s end is a time for reflection. Now is the time to review the last year. Congratulate yourself on your accomplishments. Consider what you learned from those experiences that didn’t turn out the way you planned.

As this year winds down, make time to think about where you are today and where you’d like to be by the end of next year.

Whether we’re building a business or working toward the corner office, we all have something in common: We want to be successful. While our definition of success is likely to be quite different, our desire to achieve our vision of success is the same. Read more

Tips on your acceptance speech

By Patricia Fripp, CSP, CPAE

Accepting an award is like walking a tightrope. You need to be gracious, grateful, and humble — but not so humble or self-deprecating that the audience thinks you are trivializing the honor. The warm glow of the occasion can suddenly turn chilly or sour with a few ill-chosen words.

One gentleman I was coaching was due to receive an award from an organization with over 100,000 members. Two thousand people would be in the audience.

"I want to be funny," he told me, "so I'll start by saying how desperate they must be to give me this award." I persuaded him that he'd be insulting the organization and everyone who had ever been honored. We worked together to come up with a gracious acceptance speech, still funny, but one that would leave everyone present feeling great about the evening, the award, and the organization. Read more
