Editor's Notes

Greetings! Whether or not you’re a football fan, you’ll probably spend part of this weekend eating junk food at a Superbowl party. Even if you’re not a fan, take a few minutes to watch the game. Whatever the outcome, the game may provide a good conversation piece at your next networking event.

Last week, I came across some Internet stats I’d like to share with you. Although women have outnumbered men online for about a year, men still dominate the web, according to a recent press release from Nielsen Net Ratings. The reason? Senior analyst Dawn Brozek says it’s because women still perform most of the household duties, giving men more leisure time to spend online.

Thanks to everyone who answered our January poll. In case you’re curious about the results, the top four responses were Get into shape (33%), Start my own business (19%), Reduce stress in my life (15%),and Find a new job (13%). Congratulations to the 8% of you who are happy the way you are!

Whether you’re already running your own business or looking to start one, you’ll find lots of great advice in this issue’s Spotlight, Soul Proprietor by Jane Pollak. If you’re looking for a new job, you’ll find some advice on salary negotiation in “Show Me the Money”. Don’t miss our What’s New section to find out if you’ll be next in the unemployment line and pick up some tips on stretching your interview wardrobe.

You Can Do It

As you know, I read lots of books for this column. Some provide great information. Others are warm, witty and inspirational. Once in a while, I'm lucky enough to come across a book that is informative, inspirational and fun to read. Soul Proprietor is one of those gems.

Unlike many books for entrepreneurs, Soul Proprietor, 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur by Jane Pollak is not another "how to". It's much better than that. Reading Soul Proprietor is like sitting with a wise mentor. One who is happy to share her experiences. More importantly, one who is willing to go beyond sharing her success stories and tell you about her learning experiences. You know, the ones that didn't quite turn out as planned.

Pollak says that if she can create a flourishing business out of decorating eggs, you can make a business out of anything. In Soul Proprietor, Pollak shares lessons learned on her journey from fledgling artist to successful entrepreneur. Lessons like how to be taken seriously and stepping out of your comfort zone to overcome your fears. At the end of each story is the message "see I did it, you can too."

With all the success stories on the market today, Soul Proprietor is a refreshing opportunity to gain insights from the successful entrepreneur next door. Whether you're a long-time business owner or inexperienced wannabe, Pollak's stories will inspire you to pursue your dreams. Pick up a copy, read one lesson each day. It will change you and your business for the better.

Many thanks to Jane Pollak for sending me a copy of her book after we met at an Entrepreneurial Woman's Network event.

The Finer Points of Salary Negotiations

By Vickie Axford Austin

This is the moment you've been waiting for--the job offer! After months of research, studying the job market, hours of introspection and days and weeks of networking, you finally have what looks like the job of your dreams. Wait a minute--wasn't it Yogi Berra who said, "It ain't over 'til it's over"? Until you've negotiated salary and agreed upon a number, the game isn't over yet.

For some people, this is where the fun begins, and for others, this is the part of a job search that they dread. Either way, it's part of the process, so here are some tips on the finer points of salary negotiations.  Read More

What To Expect When You Relocate

By Nancy Morris

Whether moving across the world or across the country, culture shock presents one of the most unique and complex transitions we can face in our lives. As well as relocating, sojourners are also faced with career, family, social and even language transitions.

Culture shock is associated with stress, anxiety, confusion and feelings of being lost or out of place. It effects the way we think about ourselves and others, the way we interact and how we handle our emotions. Surprisingly to many, culture shock can show up even when relocating from one region to another within our own country - we assume ‘culture shock’ only occurs when moving to a completely different country. To coin a well-known phrase, when relocating, “expect the unexpected”. Read more
