Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day! I hope you made sure to pamper yourself. Even though my sweetie was away, I dined on my favorite: pizza, extra cheese and pepperoni. On a more serious note, have you been following the Olympics? If not, take a look. Despite the controversy over the judging, the sportsmanship displayed by the athletes has been as spectacular as the mountain views. Whether you’re a corporate animal or entrepreneur, Olympic athletes can teach you how to be a champion in your life. First lesson, if you fall, get up and keep going. The only real losers are those who don’t try. Second, if you do lose do it graciously. Badmouthing the other guy only makes you look bad. Third, have a life outside your work. The most successful athletes think about more than their sport. This issue focuses on getting ahead. As I’m constantly reminded, you will get a lot further with a little help from your friends. But, if the idea of networking makes your legs weak, pick up a copy of our current Spotlight: How To Work A Room, by Susan RoAne. On a similar note, you will find some ways to improve your communication skills in How to Use Soundbites in Business, by Susan Harrow. And, anyone considering an advanced degree should read Making the Grade, by our career-planning expert, Amy Ertel. In March, we’ll be bringing you some tips on how to create a better work environment. Whether that means organizing your cubicle or sprucing up your home office. In April, I hope to meet some of you at my MBTI workshop being offered through Norwalk Community College, here in Norwalk, CT. (See Change Your Life below for details.) Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along. It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to decide if graduate school is the right move for you By Amy Ertel The decision to apply to graduate school is a big one. All the time, money, and energy that go into earning a graduate degree are variables that many women consider when making their decision. Here are a few things to think about before you decide. First and foremost, consider your individual career goals and motivation for earning an advanced degree. Although going to graduate school can be a wonderful educational experience, many industries do not require education beyond a bachelor’s degree. Read More |

Creating memorable conversation By Susan Harrow To speak succinctly is an art. The irony of talking concisely is that people will listen to you longer. Colleagues, employees, bosses and audiences will wait for your next pithy phrase. Radio and TV talk show hosts will give you more air time. Journalists will quote you. Master of pith, Mark Twain, describes a soundbite as, "A minimum of sound to a maximum of sense." Soundbites consist of fascinating phrases. They can be facts, anecdotes, stories, one-liners, or clever quips. Bottom line, they are sentences memorably packed with meaning. Here is how to create them: Read more |
