Today many people are looking for work. In January, I had the pleasure of speaking to a career transition group. Networking was the topic and over 75 people attended. While I enjoy working with a large group, I was disheartened to see so many unemployed. Afterwards, I talked with a few who had been out of work for months. While some were understandably discouraged, most were still optimistic about the future. Even if you’re not looking right now, given our current economic climate it’s a good idea to have an updated resume on hand (Resume Writing Tips). If your resume does its job and gets you an interview be sure to follow up (Five Ways to Make Yourself Memorable). Finally, in some cases companies are opting to begin with a telephone interview. Be sure you’re ready before you dial in (Improve Your Telephone Interview Skills). As I mentioned in our last issue, beginning in March The Career Intelligencer will be available in HTML only. AOL users with 6.0 or higher will be able to support HTML. Each issue will include a link to an online version for anyone who does not have HTML capabilities. We also will include a link in each newsletter for those readers who prefer to read The Career Intelligencer online. We have been thinking about making this change for several months. While I would like to be able to continue both formats, as a relatively small company we need to use our resources where they will benefit most of our readers. Thanks for your understanding. Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along. It's your life, make the most of it :)

How to create a resume that gets results By Annemarie Cross, CPRW, CRW, CEIP, CCM Due to the increasing competitiveness of today’s job market, the job seeker is required to be far more aggressive in their overall job search campaign, particularly when developing their career-marketing document – the resume. With a window of opportunity often as little as 10 seconds for the resume to spark the reader’s attention, a dynamic document is needed that portrays the candidate’s expertise and overall value offered. Gone are the days of a task-based resume with an inventory of a position’s responsibilities, coupled with a standard (and boring) list of personal aptitudes. This has been replaced with an achievement / accomplishment driven document depicting you as a pro-active candidate who demands results, and that demonstrates the significant value on offer to the organization. A thank you note is one of the best ways to stand out By Annette Richmond, MA In this sluggish economy, job seekers need to make the most of every opportunity. The good news is that the overall unemployment rate dropped slightly in January from 6.0 to 5.7 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The figure for adult women saw a more significant change, falling from 5.3 to 4.7 percent. The bad news is that many people still are out of work. As a result, today’s job market is highly competitive. Which makes it more important than ever for job seekers to stand out from the crowd. So what can you do? Sending a thank you note is one of the quickest, and easiest, ways to get an employer's attention. Here are five ways to make you memorable after the interview is over. Read more |
