Editor's Notes

Happy New Year! This week was a turning point. Most of us spent the beginning of the week reflecting on 2002. If you turned on the TV you couldn’t avoid it. Then we got ready to welcome in 2003. Now that we’ve recovered from our celebrations, we’re ready to move forward.

New Year’s is synonymous with fresh starts and new beginnings. It’s time to decide what we want to accomplish this year and begin creating our plan. New Year’s is when many of us get around to making those changes we’ve been thinking about for the last six months (Get What You Want With Goals).

January is a time for renewal. Time to rethink things like our business wardrobe (Business Attire For Women). Also time to plan how we’re going to get ahead. Whatever your business, you can increase your visibility by speaking in public. While surveys show speaking before an audience is our number one fear, there are things you can do to make it less nerve racking (The Critical Moments Before You Speak).

One of the skills employers value most is the ability to communicate effectively. If you’d like to improve your communication skills pick up a copy of this issue’s Spotlight: Conversationally Speaking by Alan Garner. Whatever your abilities I promise you’ll pick up a few tips from Garner.

I’d want to give you notice about an upcoming change in the Career Intelligencer. Over the next few months we’re going to be switching the newsletter to HTML format only. If you don’t want to receive HTML we’ll still be happy to send you a link to our online version. Look for a message explaining how to transfer your subscription in the next few weeks.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Communicate!

Often people ask how I choose books for this column. Finding books for this column is difficult, but not complicated. First, the book must be informative and fun to read. (If I struggle to read the first chapter of a book it goes back on the shelf.) Next, I look for something that will be useful to a wide audience: everyone from entrepreneurs to students to corporate VPs.

While there are tons of books on the market today, it's not easy to meet that criteria. However, sometimes I get lucky and stumble across a gem like Conversationally Speaking, Tested New Ways to Increase Your Personal and Social Effectiveness, by Alan Garner

Conversationally Speaking is a must read for anyone who would like to improve his or her communication skills. Garner starts off discussing the difference between open-ended and closed-ended questions. He goes on to explain how adjusting the way you phrase your questions can dramatically change the information you receive.

Using easily recognizable, often humorous, examples, Garner covers every part of the communication equation from active listening to nonverbal communication to reducing stress in social situations. My favorite chapter, Resisting Attempts at Manipulation, will help anyone who's ever reluctantly agreed to do something they didn't want to do.

Whether you're in business for yourself or trying to move up the corporate ladder, having solid communication skills will help you become more successful. Even if you consider yourself to be a good communicator, I promise you'll pick up a few tips from this book. Just like I did.

Get What You Want With Goals

Creating a plan is the first step

By Annette Richmond, MA

New Year’s is a time of fresh starts and new beginnings. Chances are many of us resolved to make changes in our lives as we counted down to 2003. Maybe the decision was to find a new job or drop a few pounds. Unfortunately, whatever our intent, by March most of our New Year’s resolutions will be nothing more than a memory.

But this year can be different. This year you can turn your resolutions into results. If you’re serious about making changes in your life you need to start by setting goals: concrete, measurable goals.

The first step is to figure out your main objective or long-term goal. Be specific. Generalizations like "I will get into shape" or "I will increase my business" don’t work. Goals need to be specific statements of what you intend to do. For example, “I will lose 10 pounds in two months” or “I will develop 10 new clients this year.” Once you have your goals in place, you can create a plan to reach them.  Read more

Dressing the Part

By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

What, exactly, is "appropriate" business attire? That's sort of like asking, "How long is a piece of string?" It's not a "one size fits all" proposition. It depends on your line of work, your corporate culture, and your audience.

If you have strong skills and you get the business attire right, the "sky's the limit" in your field. But if you fumble on the dress code-even if you're technically competent-your climb will slow considerably, if not stall completely. How you look will open (or close) the door to opportunity; what you know will keep you in the room. Read more
