Editor's Notes

Happy New Year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. And that you're warmer than I am. Since January 1st we've been experiencing a deepfreeze here in the Northeast. I'm already counting the days till Spring. Brrrr!

In this issue, we focus on Being More Successful. I'm excited announce that Carole Martin, The Interview Coach, is now working with career-intelligence.com as a contributing writer. If you're looking for a new position you'll find some great tips for standing out from the crowd in her article Finding Your Uniqueness In Today's Job Market. Read Six Steps to Being More Successful in 2004 for advice on taking yourself to the next level this year.

Whether you're an entrepreneur or trying to get ahead in a corporate environment you should know that casual dressing is experiencing a backlash. If you don't have a suit in your closet it's time to get one (Return of the Suit). Speaking of closets now is a good time to get a jump on that Spring cleaning (Eliminate Your Excuses). Particularly if you're hibernating inside like I am.

Since our launch, my goal has always been to bring you timely information and the best assessment tools available. Because so many of you tell me that you're changing careers, I decided to add the Career Transition Report to our offerings. Based on your answers to the Strong Interest Inventory, the Career Transition Report evaluates your interests based on the job functions found in most companies including: marketing, sales, customer service and HR. For more information and to see a sample of this new report visit our Assessment channel.

Finally, I want to let you know that in order to continue offering a free newsletter we will begin publishing The Career Intelligencer once a month. While this was not an easy decision for me, it was necessary change. You'll still find the newsletter filled with great articles and advice. In fact, we'll be packing a little bit extra in every issue.

Thanks for your continued support, please help us grow by passing The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

Stay warm. See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

A Is For Attitude

Ever notice how when you feel great good things happen? And when you start the day off badly things often go downhill from there? Well, according to Keith Harrell it's all about your attitude.

In Attitude Is Everything, 10 Life-Changing Steps To Turning Attitude Into Action, Harrell explains how developing a positive attitude changed his life and can change yours too. But, Harrell is more than just a cheerleader. In Attitude Is Everything, Harrell uses real-life examples to demonstrate:

  • The difference a change in attitude can make
  • How to stay positive when things look bleak
  • The importance of surrounding yourself with positive people
  • How to find and develop your passion
  • The value of setting written goals
  • The most effective ways to deal with change
  • How giving back helps you in the end

Over the last few years, I've learned how important it is to have a solid support system. That's probably why one of my favorite chapters is Creating Your A-Team. Here Harrell talks about what makes an A-Team and how you can develop one of your own.

Unlike some motivational speaker/authors who never mention their own flaws, Harrell shares several times when he had to get his own Attitude back on track. His honesty and openness is part of what makes this book such an inspirational read.

Often poignant, never crossing over to preachy, Attitude Is Everything helped me stretch my own emotional muscles. I bet it will do the same for you.

How to Stand Out from a Crowd of Candidates

By Carole Martin

If you have been reading articles or listening to news reports about the job market, it becomes obvious that the number of people currently seeking jobs outnumbers the jobs that are now available.

If you happen to be one of those job seekers, you realize that you are competing against the odds. The question is, "How can you make yourself stand out when there are so many other candidates looking at the same job?" The answer is to "focus" - focus on what makes you unique. Read More

How to make this year one of your most productive

By Annette Richmond

Right now 2004 stretches before us all shiny and new. With it comes a renewed sense of optimism and endless possibilities. But, the truth is unless we make change happen we'll be looking back at the same old story again next year.

You've probably heard the saying, "Everything comes to those that wait." Well I think Thomas Edison said it more accurately, "Everything comes to he who hustles while he waits." The only way to get ahead is to keep moving forward. Read More
