Editor's Notes

Happy New Year! I can hardly believe this is the first issue of 2002. And that this will be our third year of publishing The Career Intelligencer. Many of you have been with us since the beginning. Thank you for your continued support.

Ever made a New Year’s Resolution? Many of us start off with optimistic promises to ourselves. Unfortunately, by mid-January our resolve has already started to wane. Yes, we’ve made a few steps in the right direction. Unfortunately, we’ve made little progress. But, this year can be different. If you’ve had trouble reaching your objectives, pick up some new strategies in Goal Tending: Getting ahead by setting goals.

My favorite New Year’s offerings are the post-holiday sales. They give me a chance to build my business wardrobe and pick up a few trendy items *on the cheap.* If you’d like to shop smarter this year get some advice from professional image consultants in Upgrade Your Look: Shopping post-holiday sales.

For everyone who’s contacted me about the MBTI, I’m happy to announce that I’ll be offering a MBTI workshop through Norwalk Community College (NCC) in April. (The four-hour workshop will run on consecutive Thursday evenings.) For more information visit the NCC site and click on Extended Studies. My class is listed under Professional Development.

Would you like to be featured on our home page? Share your success story with thousands of women from around the world? We’re always looking for first-person articles like Lisa Lake's piece on Business Politics for our Women Only section. Send your idea or complete story to me at editor@career-intelligence.com.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Talking Type

Can you read people? Do you know what your boss expects from you? Do you know what your clients really want? If you answered no to any of these questions Type theory can help.

Type theory can help you become a better communicator. It can help you understand how people get information and make decisions. It can help you recognize different work styles. And being able to read people makes it easier to get what you want.

If all this sounds appealing, pick up a copy of Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types That Determine How We Live, Love and Work by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen. It's one of the best books about Type theory on the market.

Last year I had the pleasure of hearing Kroeger speak at an Association for Psychological Type (APT) dinner. In addition to being one of the most respected authorities on Type theory, Kroeger is an entertaining and engaging speaker. And lucky for us, his knowledge and personality jump off the pages of this book.

Type Talk begins by explaining the differences between the eight preferences. Subsequent chapters discuss how to use Type theory at home and the office. Chapter six, Typewatching from 9 to 5, covers how personality type affects the way we set goals and manage our time. It also goes over ways to resolve conflict between the various Types.

Filled with easy to recognize, often-humorous examples, Type Talk will help you understand why your friends, colleagues and family members behave the way they do. It also will help you become a better communicator. And being able to communicate is the first step to getting along.

New MBTI Workshop

Are you interested in taking the MBTI?

Over the last year, lots of our readers have been interested in taking the MBTI. Many have also said they want more than a one-hour consultation.

So we created our new What's Your Type? workshop.

What's Your Type? is your opportunity to *sample* the MBTI without risk, from the comfort of your home or office. If you decide to withdrawn after the first session, you can request a full refund (minus a small processing fee).

Workshop starts Thursday, January 10th

Getting ahead by setting goals

By Annette Richmond

New Year’s seems synonymous with fresh starts and new beginnings. Whether you’re in the market for a new job or trying to build your business, now is the time to renew your efforts. It’s also a time to stop clinging to tactics that haven’t been working and move forward.

As any coach will tell you, one of the keys to success is setting goals. This does not mean making vague statements like, “I will find a new job” or “I will increase my business.” It means creating a written plan that includes reasonable and measurable long-term and short-term objectives.

What coaches may not admit is that setting goals isn’t easy. Setting goals is more than deciding what you want to do. It involves figuring out what you need to do to get where you want to go. And how long it will take you to get there. Read More

Making the most of post-holiday sales

By Annette Richmond

After a dismal holiday season, markdowns and discounts are already underway. If you shop smart these post-holiday sales can be a great opportunity to both upgrade and update your look.

While racks of reduced items can be tempting, try to remember the professional’s tenet: just because something’s on sale doesn’t mean it’s a bargain. Those navy slacks may look like a good deal, but if they don’t go with anything else in your closet they’re not.

So what’s the secret to shopping the sales? Plan ahead. Sales are a great time to stock up on items that may be beyond your budget. Now is the time to upgrade your look by adding quality clothes and accessories that work with your existing wardrobe. Read more
