Editor's Notes

Greetings! After a slow start, I’m finally back in the saddle. So to speak. Attending three busy networking events last week indicates that business is back in business.

Lately many of the people I meet are in transition. This may mean that they’re between jobs or trying to jumpstart their business. Often what differentiates them is their attitude: Their attitude about their situation, their attitude about themselves.

Some people are more comfortable with change, more comfortable taking risks. If you want to be successful you need to be comfortable making mistakes too (Check Your Ego At the Door). Self-esteem is another important component of success (Stepping Stones to Self-Confidence). Whatever you’re trying to do, begin with you.

Check out the What’s New section below for advice from Sherry Maysonave on how to revamp a sloppy wardrobe, tips from Amy Ertel on which resume format to use and suggestions on how to destress your mornings from Frances Lylan Wolff. Because stress seems to be the emotion of the day, I decided to revive Got Stress!

Finally, don’t forget to weigh in on our New Year’s Resolution Poll. Last year “Get in Shape” got the most responses. In our next issue, I’ll compare the 2003 results to the 2002 responses.

I want to give you notice about an upcoming change in The Career Intelligencer. Over the next few months we’re going to be switching the newsletter to HTML format only. If you don’t want to receive HTML we’ll still be happy to send you a link to our online version. Look for a message explaining how to transfer your subscription in the next few weeks.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Luck Is What You Make It!

Since launching career-intelligence.com, I've focused a lot of attention on networking. That's because developing mutually beneficial relationships is the single most effective way to meet your personal and professional goals.

Nearly everyone knows it's important to network. But, many of us are not comfortable meeting new people. Even if we are great at "working the room" we may fall flat when it comes to following up.

Well, I have a fast-reading, informative, little gem that can teach you every step of the networking process: Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career by Andrea R. Nierenberg.

Click for Details

Nonstop Networking covers every aspect of the networking process from meeting people to getting to know them to keeping in touch with those near and far. While learning basic networking techniques is important, Andrea goes beyond the fundamentals. She explains different communication styles and describes the type of people you need in your network. And because, as Andrea says, "we are all shy in some situations" there's a special section for Introverts.

I can't take credit for finding Nonstop Networking; I met Andrea two years ago at a weeklong training. We hit it off and have kept in touch by phone and email. Over the years she's been a valuable resource and I was delighted to learn that she was writing this book.

Over the past few years, I've grown a great deal personally and professionally, primarily through networking. But, developing relationships isn't always easy. That's why I found Andrea's systems for keeping your network alive and organizing your contacts particularly valuable.

Nonstop Networking is filled with practical advice and entertaining anecdotes delivered in Andrea's warm, gracious style. Whatever your expertise, Nonstop Networking can take you to the next level. I know it taught me a thing or two.

Are Your Employees Building Relationships?

Are your employees developing relationships or building barriers?

Do they think handing out business cards is networking?

Do they try to “sell” people at a networking event?

Do they follow up with uninvited pitches for products?

That’s not networking. That's negative networking.

Help your employees make better connections. Contact Annette Richmond, MA

Check Your Ego At The Door

Don’t let your ego get in your way

By Annette Richmond, MA

Why are we so hard on ourselves? Why is it whenever we try something new we think we must do it well right away? I was thinking about these questions last week while trying to make it through a spinning class.

It was my second class. If you’ve never tried spinning, let me tell you, it’s nothing like pedaling a bike down a country road. It’s more like running up a steep hill while being chased by an unrelenting 800-pound bear. At least when you’re a beginner.

My first class had been tolerable. The instructor was low key and the class was filled primarily with women in reasonable condition. It was difficult to be sure, but not too intimidating.

The second class was led by an overly, energetic guy. The participants looked like they had just stepped off the cover of a health magazine. I was the only one there wearing sweats and a T-Shirt. As soon as I entered the room I knew I was in trouble. Read more

Three ways to build your self esteem

By Lois Raats, M.Ed.

How can I acquire more self-confidence?
How can I improve my self-esteem?
I wish I could feel as "together" as everyone else seems to be...

I hear these kinds of questions and comments several times each week in my office, from some of the most outwardly successful people you could imagine.

Self-esteem is one of the cornerstones of emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence is the foundation for a successful life. People often believe that if they could just feel better about themselves, their lives would go so much better; they would be so much more successful.

But feeling good is not the source of self-esteem. Read more
