Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! Being hit with our first 90 degree plus day tells me that those dog days of summer are here. It's time to turn up the AC and take at least a bit of a break. Responses to our Vacation Poll aside, I hope that you'll be taking a vacation this year.

As the weather heats up, it's tempting to take things easier. Just be careful you don't slack off too much, particularly if you're looking for a job. Get some advice on how to keep your momentum this summer from the Interview Coach, Carole Martin (Those Lazy, Crazy Days of Summer).

Speaking of warmer weather, Summer means showing more skin even in the office, which makes staying in shape even more important. The trick is to stay motivated even as the thermometer rises (How To Get and Stay Motivated).

Finally if you are planning a get-away make sure that you're not taking your entire wardrobe with you (How To Pack Light). See this issue's Spotlight for a few ways to boost your career smarts while lying by the pool or at the beach.

One of the things that's been missing from our web site is a way for you to update your profile. Happily, our technology department has now addressed that issue. Now, when you login from the career-intelligence.com home page, you'll have the option of changing any part of your profile. Now, you can change your email address, username, password and some demographic information. You also can subscribe (or unsubscribe) from The Career Intelligencer and opt in to be part of any focus groups we may do.

As for the Summer Vacation Poll, 42% of you said you wouldn't be taking any vacation this Summer, 12% are planning one or two weekend getaways, and 7% will be taking several long weekends. A lucky 20% are taking a week-long vacation, while a luckier 19% will have two weeks off. Please take a moment to answer the Current 2004 Election Poll. I'll fill you in on the responses in an upcoming issue. Thanks.

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Summer Reading

Happy summer! After a long, cold winter it’s time to rest, relax and rejuvenate: Time to spend at least a few days strolling along the beach, sitting by a pool or, one of my favorites, lazing in a hammock.

Everyone knows that business often takes a backseat to fun in the summer. But, savvy professionals know better than to forget about work completely. To make sure you have an edge this fall make sure you slip a book, or two, into your beach bag.

Here are my reading recommendations for this summer. Some are new, others are perennial favorites. None of them will put you to sleep. Each one is an engaging read that will entertain and inform you. I promise.

Do What You Are, Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type, by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger, is designed to help you choose a career based on your Myers-Briggs Type. Interesting reading even if you don’t know your type.

How to Use Power Phrases, To say what you mean, Mean what you say & Get what you want, by Meryl Runion. Being able to communicate effectively is one of the keys to success. If you’ve been having trouble getting your point across, without ruffling too many feathers, I highly recommend this book.

Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career, by Andrea R. Nierenberg. A fast-reading, informative little gem, filled with practical advice and entertaining anecdotes delivered in Andrea’s warm, gracious style. Whatever your expertise, Nonstop Networking can take you to the next level. I know it taught me a thing or two.

On Writing Well, The classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction, by William Zinsser, is a must read for anyone who writes and wants to be a better writer. Zinsser covers everything from eliminating the clutter in your writing to developing your voice.

Soul Proprietor, 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur, by Jane Pollak, is a gem. It’s like sitting with mentor who’s willing to share her success stories and her learning experiences. You know, the ones that didn’t quite turn out as planned. Fun and inspirational, a great read for every businesswoman.

Who Moved My Cheese? An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life, by Spencer Johnson, MD,is a simple parable that provides some unique insights into the truth about change. An entertaining read, that will help you cope with change in every area of your life. (Perfect for everyone who has trouble stepping out of his or her comfort zone.)

Six ways to get through your job search this summer

By Carole Martin

The temptations are there - warm, lazy, casual days, when the shoes of choice are "flip flops." Taking the summer off and getting back into the groove of things when the "kids go back to school" would be very easy. You think to yourself, "Nothing's happening during the summer anyway - everybody goes on vacation during these months."

Stop! This is not the time for giving in to those pleasures and giving up on your job search, at least not all the way. You are better off pacing yourself during the summer months, and not stopping your search altogether. Read More
