Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! According to the calendar Summer has officially started. Soon we'll be celebrating the 4th of July here in the States. I hope that you will take some time to relax over the long weekend.

Speaking of relaxing, it's tempting to taking it easy over the Summer. But, while scheduling time for you is important, it's essential to keep at least one eye on your career. Plan to do some networking at social events. Read a business book, or two, at the beach. And maintain a professional image even though the thermometer is climbing.

Summer is filled with barbecues and picnics at the beach, all opportunities to broaden your network. They're also opportunities to develop your communication skills. If you want to be remembered as a great conversationalist be sure that you spend most of your time listening (Learn to Listen). As a bonus, the more you learn about other people the easier it will be to develop a relationship.

As the weather heats maintaining a professional image can become challenging. In many offices the dress code relaxes a bit. Just make sure that you don't let relaxed become sloppy (A Guide to Casual Skirts). Finally, try to keep your cool on vacation by planning ahead (Vacationing With Kids).

If you're looking for a job don't miss this month's Spotlight: Boost Your Interview I.Q. by Carole Martin. Carole is a nationally known interviewing expert that I've had the pleasure of knowing for several years. After reading her new book I have to say that it's probably the next best thing to having Carole coach you herself.

We're continuing to run our Summer Vacation Poll. Please take a moment to add your comments. Thanks.

And thanks for your continued support, please help us continue to grow by forwarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

Happy 4th of July! See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Show Don't Tell

I think you’ll agree that few situations are as intimidating as a job interview. You can get help with your resume. A friend or a recruiter may get you in the door. But, when it comes to meeting with an employer you are on your own.

For years, employers asked candidates to predict what they would do in a hypothetical situation. For example, "If . . . what would you do?" Today employers are less interested in what you think you would do in the future. They want to know what you already have done. This technique is referred to as behavioral interviewing.

Behavioral interviewing is based on the idea that past achievements are a good indicator of future successes. The key to performing well in a behavioral interview is to be prepared. That’s where Carole Martin’s new book, Boost Your Interview I.Q., comes in.

Like Martin’s first book (Interview Fitness Training), Boost Your Interview I.Q. is a workbook. The book begins with The Interview I.Q. Test. You test your knowledge by choosing Best answers to 50 tough questions.

After each question Martin provides three answers. As the reader, your job is to choose the best answer for each. On the following page, Martin evaluates each answer rating it as Strong, Mediocre or Weak.

In Part Two, Martin focuses on improving your interviewing skills. She explains how to turn your experiences into well-told stories which demonstrate that you are the best candidate for the job. She also discusses how to predict which skills are most likely to be appealing to an employer.

While you might like to think that the best candidate gets the job, the truth is that the candidate who is best at selling themselves is the one who gets hired. Pick up a copy of Boost Your Interview I.Q. today. It’s the next best thing to being personally coached by an expert.

Good communication begins with listening

By Annette Richmond

Whether you're interviewing with a potential employer, meeting with a client or giving a project update to your boss whether you're successful or not depends in large part on your communication skills.

Unfortunately, most people think of communication as talking or writing. They think primarily about getting their message across to the other person. This is a big mistake. Read More

Additional Articles New!A Guide To Casual Skirts by Diana Pemberton-Sikes — One of the best ways to stay cool in warm weather is to skip the shorts or cropped pants and reach for a skirt instead.
