Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! While it's still rather chilly here in the Northeast, I'm optimistic that the weather will turn warmer by the 4th of July. Wherever you are, I hope you have a fun, festive holiday weekend.

Speaking of summer, I want to let you know that during July and August, we will be on our summer schedule. For the next two months, you will be receiving The Career Intelligencer only once per month instead of every other week. Between vacations and holidays, we know everyone, including us, is thinking less about business this time of year. Don't worry; we'll be back on our bi-weekly production schedule in September.

On another note, we're also making some changes to the career-intelligence.com website. Look for some exciting new features, some of them fee-based, over the next several months.

In this issue, the focus is Strategic Thinking. My brief stint at a recruiting firm taught me that summer is not the best time to look for a job. However, it's a great time for some strategic thinking. Get ready for fall by creating a job-search plan (Where the Jobs Are). Make sure you also consider the best way to sell yourself to potential employers (We Had Better Think Again . . . If). Finally, learn to be ready for change (Ready for the Balance Beam?).

Before you head for vacation, take a look at this issue's Spotlight: Summer Reading. Because summer also is a great time to jumpstart your career-development. I've included six books that can help you get ahead and get along in the workplace.

Next time you visit career-intelligence.com, please take a moment to complete the Employee Recognition Poll on our home page. I'll share the results with you in July.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Summer Reading

Happily those lazy, hazy days of summer are almost upon us. Even if you're in a cooler climate, it's time rest, relax and rejuvenate. Time for days spent strolling along the beach, sitting by a pool or, one of my favorites, lazing in a hammock.

Everyone knows that business often takes a backseat to fun in the summer. But, don't forget about work completely. Before you leave for vacation, spend a little time shopping for books to take along. Knowing more than the other guy gives you a competitive edge.

Here are my reading recommendations for this summer. Some are new, others are old favorites, none of them are snoozers. (You know, the ones that are packed with solid information but are dry as dust to read.) Each one is an engaging read that will entertain and inform you. I promise.

Conversationally Speaking, Tested New Ways to Increase Your Personal and Social Effectiveness, by Alan Garner Filled with easily recognizable, often humorous, examples, Conversationally Speaking is a must read for anyone who would like to improve his or her communication skills. (Includes a very helpful chapter on handling criticism.)

Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway, by Susan Jeffers, can help you move past the fears that are stopping you from achieving your goals. A quick and informative read, filled with real-life examples of how Jeffers and others have managed to conquer their fears and realize their dreams.

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie Originally published in 1936, this book truly is one of the classics. Everyone - from my dentist to a waitress at Bertucci's - had something positive to say when they saw me reading this book. Most often the comment was, "Great Book!" I heartily agree. Filled with simple truths that will never go out of style.

Nonstop Networking, How To Improve Your Life, Luck and Career by Andrea R. Nierenberg

A fast-reading, informative little gem, filled with practical advice and entertaining anecdotes delivered in Andrea's warm, gracious style. Whatever your expertise, Nonstop Networking can take you to the next level. I know it taught me a thing or two.

Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types That Determine How We Live, Love and Work, by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen, is one of the best books about Type theory on the market. Warm and witty, this book is great for anyone who wants to better understand themselves and the people they work with.

Who Moved My Cheese? An A-Mazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life, by Spencer Johnson, MD, is a simple parable that provides some unique insights into the truth about change. An entertaining read, that will help you cope with change in every area of your life. (Perfect for everyone who has trouble stepping out of his or her comfort zone.)

Creating a strategic job-search plan is the key to success

By Annette Richmond, MA

Joe (not his real name) has been out of work for nearly one year. The first six months weren't too difficult. But, now he's beginning to wonder if he'll ever find another job. It's not that Joe hasn't been diligent about looking for work.

Joe spends the better part of every day at his computer. He logs several hours at his favorite job-search site and responds to every ad that looks promising. Naturally, he has his rewritten resume posted there as well. Still, he hasn't had so much as a nibble in the last three months. Read More

How to make a successful transition

By Don Andersson

Today's job market is tough - and commitment to working hard guarantees little! According to current studies, each of us, on average, will have ten or twelve different positions during our professional careers.

Between them we will cross many transition wastelands filled with frustration, high hopes and moments of white-knuckle despair. We may see our cash reserves depleted. Panic may appear. We may be tempted to transfer from between-position challenges to those that come with the risk of starting our own business. Read More
