Editor's Notes

Greetings! This year winter seemed to pass us by here in Connecticut. Still it’s nice to know that it’s nearly over. Looking out of my office window, I see the daffodils pushing their way up and know that spring is right around the corner. Soon everything old will be new again.

Whether you’re a 9-to-5er or on-your-own having an optimal work environment will help you be more productive. But, before you start spring-cleaning find out how to put your office in order in Make Your Workspace More Workable. If you’re in a career transition you can pick up some tips in Mastering the Interview and Building A Career Of Choice. And don’t forget to check out our What’s New! section.

This issue’s Spotlight originally ran last July. But, when I found out that Make a Name for Yourself was recently released in paperback, I couldn’t resist publishing it again. Nearly a year later, Roffer’s book remains one of my favorites. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet now’s your chance to get a great book at about half the price.

Whether you’re in the process of changing careers or trying to move up where you are, understanding yourself and others will help you get ahead faster. If you’re ready to grow, I hope to see you at my MBTI workshop at Norwalk Community College in April. (See Change Your Life below for details.)

Thanks to everyone who answered our February poll on Romance. FYI, 64 percent of you responded in the negative. Only three percent said their office didn’t allow dating between employees. However, 29 percent didn’t think it was a good idea and 36 percent said that one romantic involvement with a colleague was enough.

Please send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Building Brand You **

Do you think of yourself as a brand? As a living, breathing commodity that you are trying to sell? If you answered no, maybe it's time to change your thinking. Maybe it's time to develop Brand You. That's the premise behind Robin Fisher Roffer's new book Make a Name for Yourself.

As you know, I read lots of career-related books. I try to pass along the best ones through this column. Well, Make a Name for Yourself has fast become one of my favorites. Roffer uses easily recognizable examples like Oprah and Madonna to explain the concept of having a personal brand. She then takes you step by step through the process of developing and marketing your own brand.

In Make a Name for Yourself, Roffer covers everything from defining your dreams to packaging your brand to coming up with a strategy for success. Each chapter is designed to cover one step. But, Roffer goes beyond the basics. The chapter on packaging your brand, for example, talks about more than clothes and personal style. It also touches on business cards, resumes, websites and other promotional tools.

Part teacher, part cheerleader, Roffer encourages us to discover who we are and be true to that self. She educates and inspires with examples from real women's lives, hers and others. Whether you're a corporate animal or flying on your own, Make a Name for Yourself can help you get where you want to go.

If you're in the market for an entertaining and informative summer read, pick up a copy of Make a Name for Yourself. Take this book along on vacation and you may come back ready to conquer the world.

**First published in 2001, Make A Name For Yourself was released in paperback January 2002. This book remains one of my favorites, now's your chance to pick up a copy at almost half price!

How to put your office in order

By Annette Richmond

Ever wonder where the day went? Wish you felt more energized at the office? Afraid the piles of paper on your desk have taken on a life of their own? Well, whether your office is across town or across creating a workable environment will help.

Working in a disorganized, uncomfortable environment contributes to stress. That’s why I decided to use de-stressing as the focus of this article. To keep things interesting there’s an Eastern flavor.

For advice on creating a more comfortable, work environment, I turned to three experts: Barbara Hemphill, a nationally known consultant who amazes me with the breadth of her knowledge; Shannon Lee Turner, a feng shui consultant who’s free newsletter continues to delight me; and Jo Ann Sheldon, an organizing specialist who gave me some fresh ideas during a workshop last year. Eight things you need to know

By Susan Harrow

The best interviews sound like a comfortable conversation between two old friends: a give and take, finding a common ground, striking rapport. In between the words, interviewers are listening to your attitude, your ethics and your issues. With thoughtfulness and preparation, you can turn that first conversation into a job offer.

Know your purpose.

Take interviewers through a synopsis of your entire job history in less than five minutes. Benjamin Disraeli said, "The secret of success is constancy to purpose." In those first few minutes, interviewers get a snapshot of what is important to you and can often see the pattern of your purpose. To get clear on your goals, select information from your jobs that reflect your path. Read more
