Editor's Notes

If you live in the Northeast, or have been reading this newsletter, you know we had a particularly harsh winter. Several snowstorms, including a bona fide blizzard, took its toll on my garden. Five of the bushes we planted last year didn't survive. Looking at the weatherworn garden was discouraging. But the beautiful spring weather motivated me to get outside and plant new bushes.

Reading the recent report from the Bureau of Labor statistics it struck me that my garden mirrored our troubled economy. Many jobs that had been hanging by a thread, didn't make it through the winter either. Our national unemployment rate rose to six percent in April.

There's no doubt that times are tough right now. But, instead of letting it get you down, motivate yourself with some new ideas. If you're struggling to get more work done with a smaller staff try a few timesaving techniques (Doing More With Less). If you've been waiting for the right opportunity try creating your own (What is "opportunity"?) And if you're itching to change careers pick up a copy of this issue's Spotlight: I Don't Know What I Want But I Know It's Not This by Julie Jansen.

Don't miss our What's New section for some tips on how to avoid all night snacking. You'll also find some advice from image expert Sherry Maysonave on how to be taken more seriously at the office.

If you're in Fairfield County, CT, join me at the Fairfield Network of Executive Women (FNEW) this Wednesday. I'll be facilitating a mini-workshop on communication. For more information visit www.fnew.org. And be sure to say "Hi" if you're able to attend.

If you're not unhappy with your job I have a great new book for you: I Don't Know What I Want But I Know It's Not This, A Step-by-Step guide to Finding Gratifying Work by Julie Jansen. Reading this book is like spending several sessions with a career coach. A really good career coach.

Like many career planning books on the market, I Don't Know What I Want But I Know It's Not This is filled with self-assessment exercises. What makes this book different is that Jansen provides assessment exercises based on your circumstances. There are six situations to choose from:

  • Where's the Meaning?
  • Been There, Done That, but Still Need to Earn
  • Bruised and Gun-shy
  • Bored and Plateaued
  • Yearning to Be on Your Own
  • One Toe in the Retirement Pool

Everyone who's been laid off can benefit from Bruised and Gun-shy. In this chapter, Jansen examines the emotional impact of losing a job. She also explains a few things to look for in your next position. Hint: be sure you're a good fit with the company culture.

A book and workbook rolled into one, I Don't Know What I Want But I Know It's Not This can help you plan your next step whether you want to change careers or start your own business. Pick up your copy today; it's almost like having your own career coach.

Get more done without working longer hours

By Annette Richmond, MA

Working longer hours? Getting less done? You're not alone.

In today's economy many businesses are struggling to get more done with smaller resources and fewer employees. Sneaking into the office early to get "a little work done" is common these days. Most of the official workday is spent sitting in meetings, answering endless email, and, trying to squeeze in a little paperwork whenever we can. Read More

Georgia O'Keefe said, "I have always been terrified. But that has never stopped me from doing anything I've wanted to do."

Opportunity is simply this: the result of a willingness to change. It comes when we are open to the possibilities, to the patterns of our lives. Opportunity becomes change when we recognize that something has come to an end and we are ready to let go of it and that something new now has room to begin. Opportunity is a giving up and a welcoming in. No new movement comes until there is a clearing out process first. Read More
