Editor's Notes

Happy Summer! Next week's Memorial Day holiday marks the unofficial beginning of Summer here in the States. Here in the Northeast the weather is still wet and chilly. I hope that the weather cooperates so we can all enjoy the first long weekend of season.

I want to tell you about an exciting change on career-intelligence.com. We have just partnered with CareerBuilder.com which means you now can access one of the best job search sites on the Internet directly from career-intelligence.com. From the beginning, my goal has been to create an all-inclusive career resource. I believe that this is another step in that direction. Please take a look at our new Job Search channel.

Usually, I try to give each issue a "focus." This month, we're covering a little bit of everything from time management to summer fashion. Do you feel like you're trying to get more work done in less time? Well, you're not alone. Nearly everyone I know complains that they are overloaded. I've learned that the best way to loosen my schedule was to practice a few time-management techniques (Doing More With Less).

If you're like me, over 25 that is, you're probably wondering how to look summery without feeling uncomfortable particularly in a business situation. Before you head to the mall consider how to make the most of your figure (A Review of Summer Tops). And if you're unhappy with the image in the mirror make this the year you change it (How to Overcome Exercise Excuses).

In honor of our Wage Gap survey, this month's Spotlight is Working Girl. Although Working Girl was released more than a decade ago, the principles to getting ahead haven't changed. You still need to evaluate your image, take some risks and never give up. I hope your holiday weekend is filled with sunshine. If not, put your time to good use by picking up a copy of Working Girl.

FYI, the results of our Wage Gap poll are in. A whopping 92% of you responded yes to the question, Is there a gender wage gap? A scant 5% answered no, and 3% said they didn't know. Please take a minute to answer our new Vacation Poll. Thanks.

Thanks for your continued support, please help us grow by fowarding The Career Intelligencer to your friends and colleagues.

Enjoy the holiday. See you next month!

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Take a Lesson

Got two hours? Get a quick lesson in getting ahead by watching Working Girl. Recently released DVD, this film has long been one of my favorites. Always inspiring and entertaining, Working Girl can teach you some valuable business lessons in just one sitting.

Just in case you've never seen or heard of this movie, Working Girl is about Tess an administrative assistant trying to edge her way onto the management track. Not surprisingly there are many obstacles in her path. Through a series of events, some quite humorous, Tess gets the opportunity to get into the game. The catch is, she needs to take a big chance to pull if off.

Besides being a wonderful vehicle for Melanie Griffith, in the leading role, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, Working Girl illustrates several principles of business success. Whether you're working for a large company or out on your own:

  • The right image helps you get your foot in the door
  • Who you know is as important as what you know
  • Getting ahead involves taking risks
  • You never know where your next great idea will come from
  • Choose your alliances wisely
  • Be ready, just in case opportunity knocks
  • Stepping on others will come back to haunt you

And maybe the most important thing: Never give up.

Next time you need some motivation, inspiration or just a small kick in the pants, stop by the video store and pick up Working Girl. You can pick up a lot in just one rainy afternoon.

Get more done without working longer hours

By Annette Richmond

Working longer hours? Getting less done? You're not alone.

In today's economy many businesses are struggling to get more done with smaller resources and fewer employees. Sneaking into the office early to get "a little work done" is common these days. Most of the official workday is spent sitting in meetings, answering endless email, and, trying to squeeze in a little paperwork whenever we can. Read More

How to choose the best look for you

By Diana Pemberton-Sikes

There are several things for which I will always remember my 7th grade teacher, Mrs. H.:

  1. She was a math wiz.
  2. She taught us fractions.
  3. She spit when she spoke.
  4. She frequently wore sleeveless tops and because she would wave her arms around like a conductor when she taught, the flab under her arms would bounce.

Frankly, it was enough to make me skip my lunch. And just go straight to the dessert.:-) Read More

Can Women Be Great Negotiators? by Jim Camp — Are women at a disadvantage in negotiation? Yes, suggest a number of books and articles. No, I reply without hesitation. Anyone who doubts women's negotiating skills couldn't have worked with well-trained negotiators in the business world, because such real-world experience would have set to rest all ideas about disadvantage. If anything, women can have an edge at the bargaining table. Read More
