Editor's Notes

Happy Mother’s Day! And in honor of mothers everywhere I’d like to share this quote from Dr. Benjamin Spock, “There are only two things a child will share willingly - communicable diseases and his mother’s age.”

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, I had the opportunity to attend the 2002 Catalyst Awards Conference in April. It was wonderful to meet women from across the country and learn how much we have in common. It was also heartening to hear about three companies who have made leveling the playing field for women a priority. You’ll find highlights from the conference in Is Your Company Woman-Friendly?

Whether you’re trying to get ahead at the office or increase your client base, understanding basic etiquette is a must. If you’re not sure who pays for lunch or how to introduce your boss to your client, take a look at this issue’s Spotlight. Knowing the rules will help you feel cool, calm and collected in any situation. Respecting cultural differences is another part of the etiquette equation. In What’s Across the Pond? acculturation expert Nancy Morris explains some of the similarities and differences you’ll find when doing business in the UK.

Finally, if you’re a mother or a daughter be sure to read Practicing for PMS in our What’s New section. You’re sure to get a chuckle from this look at mothers and daughters from Dawn Rivers Baker editor of Wahmpreneur News Magazine.

Minding Your Manners

Everyone needs some sort of reference library. While I have several shelves of business-related books (many read for this column) there are a few I continually rely on when I need information.

At Ease. . . Professionally, An Etiquette Guide for the Business Arena by Hilka Klinkenberg is one of those books. Although it's billed as an etiquette guide, Klinkenberg covers everything from making a business introduction to making conversation. Don't worry if you don't have time to read it cover to cover, the chapters are arranged by topic for easy reference.

If you think proper etiquette is strictly for the over-sixty set, here are a few of the things At Ease. . . Professionally can teach you:

  • Which of the bread plates on the crowded luncheon table is yours
  • Who picks up the tab at a business lunch, regardless of who invited who
  • The correct way to extend and respond to invitations
  • Gift-giving protocol for clients and colleagues
  • Who and how much to tip when you're traveling
  • How to work effectively with an interpreter

While At Ease. . . Professionally, is for everyone, Klinkenberg includes one chapter specifically for women. Women at Work focuses on several gender-specific business issues. For example, what to do if you find yourself seated at a table with the wives while your male assistant is dining with the host. Hint: prepare your assistant in advance.

Whatever your position, good etiquette can help you move up the food chain. Remember, it's not just who you know, but, who knows you. Be sure you're not known for your bad manners.

Highlights from the 2002 Catalyst Awards Conference

By Annette Richmond

How does your company treat women? Are they known for groundbreaking initiatives? Or for subtly encouraging the “old boy’s” network?

Last month I had the opportunity to attend the 2002 Catalyst Awards Conference, held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. A nonprofit organization that works to advance women in business, Catalyst honored three companies who have demonstrated their commitment to leveling the playing field: Bayer Corporation, Fannie Mae and Marriott International, Inc.

While diverse in nature, each of these companies has implemented initiatives to develop and maintain a woman-friendly environment. Each has created programs designed to help make senior management a reality for their female employees. While some of their methods differ, their collective goals might have been summed by, Donna Klein, Vice President, Diversity and Workplace Effectiveness, Marriott International, Inc., who stressed the idea of helping women move from contributing roles into positions of leadership.  Read more

Making the most of your travels abroad

By Nancy Morris

So, you’re off to the United Kingdom on business? Great! You’ve always wanted to extend your managerial wings across The Pond (also known as the Atlantic) and now is your chance. They speak the same language, have similar values and business approaches and they’re eager to learn from you.

But are they really that similar? Do people work the same way, live the same way, enjoy similar standards of living, view the world the same way you do?

As someone who has grown up in Canada, worked throughout North American, Europe and the United Kingdom and who now lives in Northern Ireland, I speak 4 ‘languages’:

  • Canadian English
  • American English
  • British English and
  • Irish English

I speak these ‘languages’ within both social and business contexts. And it has been a learning curve over the years that, for me like many other expats and sojourners, has been exciting, curious, eye-opening and often times frustrating, confusing and downright painful. Read more
