Greetings! Twenty-two days till Turkey Day! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. And, like many of you, this year I’m more aware of what I have to be thankful for. I’m excited to tell you that two new career development reports are now available online. First is the Entrepreneur Report, which is designed to help you determine if you have what it takes to succeed as a small business owner. Second, is the Career Enrichment Report, which can help you identify which departments and day-to-day duties you’re likely to find most interesting. For more information see our Assessment channel. If you’ve ever had trouble making a decision, you’ll learn about a method I found while working as a vocational counselor in Decisions, Decisions. Job seekers can pick up some tips on finding a new position in Job Search Strategies, by Cynthia Steele-Pucci. Hint: Networking continually tops the list here. Those of you who, like me, have already started thinking about the upcoming holidays, can get some advice on how to cope from our stress-management expert, Frances Lylan Wolff in Holiday Stress-Busters. Don’t forget to check out the latest answers from our experts in the What’s New section below. Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along. It's your life, make the most of it :)

Making the right decision is easier when you know what you want By Annette Richmond Our lives are full of decisions. Where shall we go for lunch? What movie shall we see this weekend? Which job should we take? Should we go back to school? Or start our own business? And the list goes on. For most of us, the bigger the decision, the more difficult it is to make. After all there’s not much riding on which movie we rent. If we make the wrong decision what do we lose? A couple of bucks and a little bit of time. Other choices - like changing jobs or opening a business - can change our life. Dramatically. If we make the wrong decision it can set us back strategically, financially and emotionally. Anyone who’s been there can tell you, it’s the difference between gaining momentum and grinding to a screeching halt. Read More |

Tips to make your job-search easier By Cynthia Steele-Pucci These days people may be concerned about whether this is a proper time to be switching careers or looking for a new job. Although some industries, like the airline industry, are currently cutting back staffing needs other fields are hiring. So, if you’re in the market for a new job, here are some tips to make your search a little easier. There are many books that can help you get started mapping out your strengths and abilities. What Color Is Your Parachute? by Richard Nelson Bolles, for example, is an old favorite of many career counselors because its chapters specifically focus on investigating your experiences, achievements and goals. Examining your outside interests and hobbies can also help you pin down work possibilities. Another useful book is Best Answers to 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions by Matthew DeLuca. This publication discusses preparing for an interview, how to handle new and experienced interviewers, the illegal questions that employers are not allowed to ask and how to answer difficult questions. When planning your search strategies, one basic rule of thumb is not to overuse any one technique. Read more |
