Editor's Notes
Happy Thanksgiving! As I mentioned, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Not too much ceremony and no presents to buy. For us it's a relaxing day filled with family and lots of good things to eat. I hope you and yours will be able to share this time together.
Next week kicks off the holiday season here in the states. With this in mind, two of our articles focus on making the most of the upcoming season. Before you go to your office party get some advice from professional image consultants in Being Sensibly Festive. Students can pick up some tips in Surviving Finals During the Holidays.
When we first launched this site, one of the first things we did was publish a newsletter. After several years working on a magazine I was fairly confident. After all, I’d had the benefit of a great boss who taught me much about editorial. I didn’t realize how much I had to learn. In this issue, I decided to share some of what I’ve learned in In the News, What you need to know before you publish. If you’d like to find out more from *the horse’s mouth*, so to speak, join me for a new two-part workshop: Creating Great Content.
Would you like to be featured on our home page? Share your success story with thousands of women from around the world? We’re always looking for first-person articles for our Women Only section. Send your idea or complete story to me at editor@career-intelligence.com.
Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.
It's your life, make the most of it :)

Best of the Best

Finding time to read, for business or pleasure, is not easy. Often little things like life get in the way. That's why I started writing the Spotlight reviews; in the hopes of helping you separate the wheat from the chaff on your bookseller's shelves.
Originally, my Top Ten List was slated to run at the end of the year. But, because books make great gifts and next week kicks off the holiday shopping season I decided to publish it early.
So without further ado, here are my ten top picks, chosen from the business-related books I read and reviewed this year.
- Do What You Are, Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type, by Paul D. Tieger & Barbara Barron-Tieger, is designed to help you choose a career based on your Myers-Briggs Type. Interesting reading even if you don't know your type.
- EVEolution, Understanding Women-Eight Essential Truths that Work in Your Business and Your Life, by Faith Popcorn and Lys Marigold, is packed with useful, thought provoking information and advice on marketing to women. Must read for every entrepreneur.
- Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Moral and Improve Results, by Stephen C. Lundin, Ph.D., Harry Paul and John Christensen. Small on the outside and big on the inside this book is built on the idea that changing your attitude can change your life.
- Make a Name for Yourself, by Robin Fisher Roffer, is one of my newest favorites. An enjoyable and informative read, it covers everything from defining your dreams to packaging your brand to coming up with a strategy for success.
- The New Success Rules for Women by Susan L. Abrams, is part coach, part teacher, with a little philosopher thrown in. Abrams interviewed 45 women who have started at the bottom and worked their way up to the top of their professions.
- On Writing Well, The classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction by William Zinsser, is a must read for anyone who writes and wants to be a better writer. Zinsser covers everything from eliminating the clutter in your writing to developing your voice.
- Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman, by Gail Evans, discusses the different ways men and women approach business situations. Written with humor and candor, Evans explains the unwritten rules of business and the importance of adopting several innately male behaviors.
- Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson, MD, is a simple parable that provides some unique insights into the truth about change. A quick and entertaining read, this book can help you cope with change in every area of your life.
- Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want by Barbara Sher, another all-time favorite, this little gem offers practical advice on self-assessment, brainstorming, goal setting and finding that extra time to work toward your goals.
- Work it Out: Clues for Solving People Problems at Work, by Sandra Krebs Hirsh, with Jane A.G. Kise, can help anyone trying to solve people problems at the office. Hirsh provides insight into our communication, data gathering, time management and decision-making styles.
As you know I read lots of career- and business-related books each year. Many of my selections are reader recommended. Others come to my attention in other ways. I hope you find my reviews helpful. And if you come across a great book I've missed please let me know. You can always reach me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

What you need to know before you publish
By Annette Richmond
As most entrepreneurs will tell you, a newsletter is a great marketing tool. Publishing a newsletter lets you keep in touch with your readers. It gives you the opportunity to tell your clients about new products and services. And, if you do it right, it will help you build a loyal base of supporters who email copies to their friends.
Many people associate electronic publishing with an online business. However, even entrepreneurs without an online presence, can benefit from this marketing tool. Whether you’re business is online or offline or both, you’ll find electronic publishing a cost effective way to reach out to your clients. Read More

Tips to help you get through the season
By Amy Ertel
The holiday season is my favorite time of year. With all the parties, festivities, and get-togethers, as the song says, it really is the “most wonderful time of the year.” But, for those of us that are also students, the parties, festivities, and get-togethers can get in the way of another important time of the year- final exams.
Exams are stressful enough. All the events during this time don’t make preparing and studying for exams any easier. So, how do you survive exam week and also have time to have fun during the holidays? The answer is simple: Start preparing early! Read more
