Editor's Notes

Happy Holidays! Thanksgiving is right around the corner. With Hanukkah and Christmas following close behind. Soon we’ll be snowed under with activities, if not the actual white stuff.

For many of us, this is the best time of the year. It’s also one of the most stressful. Our already overtaxed lives become even busier. Which may explain why we sometimes feel less than merry and bright. That’s why this issue focuses on “Stress and the Holidays.”

To make the most of the upcoming season, experts say we should slow down and prioritize our activities (Holiday Stress Relief). When it comes to functions that we’re obligated to attend, like the holiday party, make sure you impress without becoming infamous (Make the Most of the Holiday Season). Which includes being conscious of your professional image (Being Sensibly Festive). See my Best of the Best 2002 for some great gift ideas!

And speaking of the holidays, I want to let you know that we’ll be publishing only one issue of The Career Intelligencer in December. I’m sure you’ll already have a lot on your plate.

Have a suggestion? Please send your comments to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com.

And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Best of the Best 2002

Finding time to read, for business or pleasure, is not easy. Often little things like life get in the way. That's why I started writing the Spotlight reviews; in the hopes of helping you separate the wheat from the chaff on your bookseller's shelves.

Last year, I began publishing an annual Top Ten list selected from the business-related books I read and reviewed during the year. Because books make great gifts, and next week kicks off the holiday shopping season, here are my picks for 2002.

Five ways to shine without short-circuiting

By Annette Richmond, MA

We all attend business events that are dressed up like social occasions. For some of us it’s the local Chamber of Commerce’s after-hours networking. For others it’s the monthly association dinner. Even though there is a social element to these functions it’s easy to remember that it’s a business situation.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case when it comes to holiday parties. It’s easy to get caught up in the spirit of the season, especially after a few sips of holiday cheer. Still we all need to remember that business sponsored functions are just that, business.

Holiday parties fall into two categories: those put on by professional organizations and the office party (yours or theirs).  Read more

How to make this season merry and bright

The holiday season is fast approaching. Like many people, I think the weeks from Thanksgiving to New Year’s are the best time of the year. It’s a season filled with fun and festivities. And everyone seems just a little bit nicer.

Realistically, I know it’s also one of the most stressful times of the year. In addition to our already hectic schedules now we’re attending office parties, shopping for gifts, and entertaining family and friends.

To help you make the most of the upcoming season, we asked two stress-management experts to offer some advice: Tammy Nelson, Director of the Center for Healing & Recovery in Norwalk, CT and the Ridgefield Center for Families & Children, Ridgefield, CT; and Kathleen Peterson, principal, Equinox Associates, Niles, IL.
