Editor's Notes

Happy Halloween! Almost. Changing leaves and the pumpkins on our neighbor’s porches seem to have heralded in the spooky season. I want to apologize for our late publication. Some dental surgery kept me out of the office for longer than I had anticipated, which, meant the newsletter was put together late.

Right now, our economy is still settling. While news of company layoffs continues, no one is really sure what the fallout will be yet. The September Employment Situation Summary from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed virtually no change in unemployment. However, it arrived in my inbox with the caveat that for timing reasons, the figures were not an accurate reflection of the labor market.

Despite uncertainties, we do know that people have less job security than in recent years and that the economy is not what is once was. To avoid being the one from your company standing in the unemployment line: update your resume, resuscitate your networking efforts and take a few minutes to evaluate your value with Are You the Weakest Link?

While many things remain uncertain, one thing’s for sure, when the client calls business travelers will be back in the air. Since my husband is a frequent flyer, the Platinum card-carrying kind, I’m heartened to hear that overall security measures have increased across the board. To get a glimpse of what you can expect on your next trip read Taking Flight by my in-house travel expert, Eric Richmond.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Remember the Titans

EVEolution by Faith Popcorn was originally slated for this issue's Spotlight. That changed last week when I had a couple of teeth pulled. While I was recuperating, I happened to see a little movie called Remember the Titans. And I wanted to take this opportunity to share it.

The phrase "little movie" associated with anything starring academy award-winning actor Denzel Washington is somewhat of an oxymoron. I almost missed Remember the Titans because I mistakenly dismissed it as a football movie. And yes, to a degree Remember the Titans is about football.

Remember the Titans also is about overcoming prejudice. Based on the 1971 integration of

Remember the Titans

T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, it's the story of how an angry, resentful, intolerant group of guys becomes an undefeated championship team. It's about courage, character, and conquest. It's about our ability to change. And the endurance of the human spirit.

Sprinkled with wonderful "moments," Remember the Titans will surprise and inspire you. On a professional level, it illustrates the benefits of being part of a cohesive team. And provides a couple of tips on how to create one. Hint: get to know each other, learn to appreciate your differences. Personally, it shows the importance of respect. And demonstrates that while one person can make a difference, two or more working together can accomplish even more.

If you doubt that changing your attitude can change a life, yours or somebody else's, take a look at Remember the Titans. In two hours, it will change your mind. At the very least, it will change your mindset.

Next issue, back to the office with reader recommended EVEolution.

What you need to know about air travel

By Eric Richmond

In the wake of last month's attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Federal government closed down the airports for several days and promised to make things safer. Among the immediate changes when the airports reopened: more security personnel; no curbside baggage check-in; and no metal knives at airport restaurants or on the planes themselves.

In the weeks since Sept 11th, it’s clear that air travel in the US has changed forever. On almost every route of travel, there are fewer passengers and fewer flights. That’s a shame, because on almost every level, flying is safer than ever before. While airport security is vastly improved, it’s not consistent across the country. All airports must adhere to the minimum-security guidelines established by the FAA, but local conditions may dictate more stringent measures. Read More

Six steps to help you stay in the game

By Annette Richmond

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the past six months, you’ve probably seen The Weakest Link. Hosted by a witty, redheaded, Brit, the game show can be quite entertaining. For the more discerning, it can also provide some lessons for the workplace.

On The Weakest Link, contestants are placed in the in the tricky situation of working together for mutual gain while competing for the grand prize. Sound familiar? Think about your office. You and your colleagues are working together, often in teams. At the same time, you’re competing for raises and recognition. When the boss moves on only one person gets the promotion. Read more
