Editor's Notes

Happy Halloween! Almost. Crisp fall weather is finally here. Business is back full swing. And some of us are already planning for the approaching holidays.

One of the problems with running an online business is our dependence on technology. A week ago my computer crashed. The good news is that I now have a new system with a 2 gigahertz Pentium® Four processor. And a lovely flat screen monitor which is much easier on my eyes. The bad news is that I’m still trying to catch up. This dilemma forced me to focus on working smarter, rather than too much harder.

Which is something we probably should all try to do. With this in mind, I decided to build this issue around Working Smarter. Each article is designed to help you work smarter instead of harder and still get better results.

Here you’ll find some tips on how to cut the clutter out of your workday (Not So Labor-Intensive) and some ideas for developing a business niche (Bug-Eating Bugs). And because writing is part of nearly everyone’s professional life there’s advice on being a better writer (Top Ten Tips For Writing Like A Pro).

Be sure to check out our What’s New section below. You’ll find all new answers from our experts including tips on changing careers, dealing with sexual harassment and advice on business attire in the states.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Annette Richmond

More Talking Type

Do you know what makes your clients tick? What your boss bases her decisions on? How to communicate with colleagues? Myers-Briggs Type Theory can help you answer any or all of these questions.

Besides helping you understand yourself, Type theory can help you understand the people you work with. This understanding can help you communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts more quickly and recognize different time-management styles. In short, it can help you get the results you want.

That's where Type Talk At Work: How The 16 Personality Types Determine Your Success on the Job by Otto Kroeger and Janet M. Thusen comes in. It's specifically designed to help you recognize and appreciate similarities and differences in the workplace.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Kroeger speak. In addition to being one of the most respected authorities on Type theory, Kroeger is an entertaining and engaging speaker. Happily his knowledge and personality jump off the pages of all his books.

From cover to cover, Type Talk At Work focuses on the business world. Part 1 explains the basics of Type theory and the Typewatching process. Part 2 discusses how to apply this information to ten areas including problem solving, team building, time management, conflict resolution and sales. Part 3 provides in-depth profiles of each of the sixteen Types at work.

While there's no substitute for attending a Myers-Briggs team-building workshop, Type Talk At Work runs a close second. Filled with easy to recognize, often-humorous examples, Type Talk will help you understand why your clients and co-workers behave the way they do. And being able to understand each other is the first step to getting along.

Kroeger's other book Type Talk: The 16 Personality Types was reviewed earlier this year.

Taking a Step Back from our Overworked Lives

By Robert J. Kriegel Ph.D.

Most of us are laboring too much and too hard these days. And everyone in this unpredictable economy and highly competitive work environment has to do more with less or as one manager told me "do more with nothing!"

A nationwide office productivity study by Xerox and Harris Interactive reveals most people are working over 60 hours a week. And over a third are working weekends. This focus on doing everything faster and cheaper has created a workplace in which everybody has shifted into high gear — rushing, racing and running. The problem is that this work style not only increases stress but actually undermines effectiveness and productivity. Read more

Finding a business niche

By Barbara Bartlein, R.N., M.S.W

Jan Dietrick, general manager of Rincon-Vitova Insectaries Inc. recently received a call from Fox TV. They were looking for 5,000 maggots immediately for a new reality TV show, “Truth or Consequences.”

They had to be clean maggots, according to Ms. Dietrick. “I was informed that the contestants had to eat them.” She responded to the request and got to work. “We’ll wash them, put them in deli containers, and have them ready for you in the morning,” she informed the network.

The bug industry is growing these days—and reality TV is just the beginning. The boom in organic gardening has turned bugs into big business. Read more
