Editor's Notes

Happy Labor Day! If you’re here in the States, I hope you had a relaxing, refreshing long weekend. Now that September is here we’ll be back to publishing The Career Intelligencer twice a month. Expect the next issue about mid-month.

While it isn’t technically fall yet, Labor Day marks the unofficial end to the summer season. The holidays are over. Now it’s time for business to get back to business.

With this in mind, this issue focuses on Sending the Right Message. In Listen Up, I’ve shared a few ways to improve your communication skills. Nightmare Employees, by career-planning expert Cindy Pucci, can help you evaluate how colleagues see you. And anyone who wants to improve her PR skills should pick up a copy of our Spotlight: Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul by Susan Harrow.

Don’t forget to check out our What’s New section below. Read 10 Fashion Mistakes That Can Spoil Your Look by image expert Diana Pemberton-Sikes to make sure you’re sending the right message. You’ll also find new career planning, stress reducing and professional image advice from our experts.

As I mentioned in our last issue, through a recent affiliation with The Center for Healing & Recovery in Norwalk, CT, I am available for one-on-one coaching. I’ll be giving seminars and MBTI workshops there and Norwalk Community College this fall. Visit our Tools channel for more information.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Annette Richmond

Getting Out There

Many of us equate getting publicity with shamelessly hawking our product or ourselves. We view promotion as a necessary evil. And end up doing as little as possible.

If this sounds like you help is here. In her new book, Sell Yourself Without Selling Your Soul, A Woman's Guide to Promoting Herself, Her Business, Her Product, or Her Cause with Integrity and Sprit, Susan Harrow takes you step-by-step through the public relations' process.

As you probably know, there are lots of books on generating media interest. Most cover basics like writing press releases and developing relationships with the press. Harrow takes the time to go deeper. Getting into topics like discovering your publicity style and understanding what may be holding you back.

Want to be a better communicator? That’s easy. Become a better listener.

Most people think of communication in terms of speaking or writing. Maybe we think this way because we’ve all taken classes with names like composition, creative writing and speech. Unfortunately, most of our schools never offered courses in listening.

But, you can teach an old dog new tricks. And if you put your mind to it, you can begin becoming a better listener today. Here are four techniques to get you started. Read more
