Editor's Notes

Greetings! It’s still hot and humid here in Connecticut. But the signs of fall are unmistakable. Lazy summer days are over and everyone’s getting back to business.

With this in mind, we’re focusing on Getting Ahead. According to our Job Transition poll (August), 51% of you want to make a change “the sooner the better”; another 13% hope to find a new job “by the end of the year”; and 15% are “keeping your options open.” Only 8% of those who responded have their own business and 12% love their jobs.

Whether you’re planning a job change or trying to build your own business the single most important thing you can do is get out there and network. The reason is simple: people like to do business with people they know. Pick up a few ways to become a better connector in Jump Start Your Career.

In this issue, you’ll also find some advice on how to get ahead at your current company (Maturity or Just Longevity?) and ways to get along better with colleagues (Work it Out). And small business owners can read why having a failed business isn’t always a bad thing (Once More, From the Top).

Be sure to check out our What’s New section below. You’ll find all new answers from our experts: Tips on how to dress in a male-dominated industry and ways to fit in at the office.

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please help us grow by passing it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Making It Work

Are you having trouble communicating at the office? Do you feel like your boss doesn't appreciate you? Or like your partner needs to get her head out of the clouds? Well, understanding Myers-Briggs Type Theory can help you understand why you find it more difficult to work with some people than with others.

If you're looking for clues on how to solve your people problems at the office, Work it Out may provide just the help you need. Today there are lots of books on Type theory. Many of them are quite informative. A few are particularly enjoyable and easy to understand.

Work it Out, by Sandra Krebs Hirsh, with Jane A.G. Kise, is one of the better ones. Hirsh weaves workplace difficulties into mini mysteries to illustrate our different communication, data gathering, time management and decision-making styles. One chapter (The Case of the Communication Conundrum), for example, focuses on the problems that arise when a team comprised of half Introverts (who prefer to think about a project) and half Extroverts (who would rather talk about a project) try to work together.

Written with humor and candor, Work it Out will teach while entertaining you. It is sure to provide you with valuable lessons learned from easily recognizable workplace situations. It will also give you the opportunity to take a good look at yourself. Which is always the best way to start.

How to become a better connector

By Annette Richmond

We’ve all heard how important it is to network. Someone, somewhere along the way has told us it’s the best way to find a new job or build a business. And it makes sense. Networking works because people like to do business with people they know.

Unfortunately, networking is like eating a healthy diet. We all know we need to increase our contacts if we want to be successful. But, we’d rather not walk into a room of 50 people we don’t know. I know I should eat a nutritious diet if I want to stay healthy. So every morning I eat Oatmeal with Soymilk for breakfast. Now that oatmeal is OK, but I’d rather have a jelly donut. Read more

When your business fails

By Dawn Rivers Baker

Most small businesses fail.

I bet you've heard that before. And different sets of people who have committed their careers to helping small business owners seem to react to that fact in different ways.

On the one hand, some of the people who offer pre-startup counseling to would-be small business owners use their position to be as discouraging as possible, apparently operating under the theory that not starting a business is preferable to starting one that fails. The problems with that attitude are so blindingly obvious that they don't really need to be rehashed here.  Read more
