Editor's Notes

Happy Labor Day! For many of you, today is the beginning of a long weekend and the unofficial end of summer. Here’s hoping the weather cooperates over the holiday weekend for all of us. I also want to let you know that I will be away in mid-September so our next issue will be out a few days late.

Congratulations to Mikkie, winner of our most recent drawing. She will receive the product of her choice from our career-intelligence.com store. Many thanks to everyone who participated in our subscription drive.

For most of us, the Labor Day Weekend marks the unofficial end of summer. Vacation is over. The kids are back in school. And, wherever you are, you’re probably feeling a renewed interest in your career.

Now is the time to recharge your networking efforts. While many organizations stall over the summer, most will be back in full swing by mid-September. Before you go to your next event, read How to Make the Most of a Networking Event.

Moving in the Right Direction, will give you some insight into women’s standing here in the States. Researching this article, I was surprised to find how much women’s status varies from state-to-state. Finally, because fall is also synonymous with fashion, we’re happy to bring you the Rules of Shoes, by Diana Pemberton-Sikes. I’ve been reading Diana’s newsletter for several months now and find it filled with helpful advice.

Also, I’m pleased to announce that Amy Ertel has recently joined us as a career-planning expert. Read her advice on getting into grad school in our What’s New Section. And don’t forget to check out the answers from our other experts as well.

We’ve decided to continue our Work/Life Contest through the month of September. The winner will win his or her choice of either the Strong Interest Inventory (Basic Profile) or the TKI report. To enter, tell us how you balance or blend your personal and professional lives. (See Contest below) And, yes, prizes are transferable, so your mother, brother, sister, husband can take the assessment instead of you.

As I’ve mentioned, some areas of career-intelligence.com are now Member’s Only. While membership is Free, you will have to join if you want to continue full-access to the site. (Please be patient while we are going through this transition.)

Please feel free to send your comments or suggestions to me at arichmond@career-intelligence.com. Let me know what you want to see here and I'll try to bring it to you. And, if you know anyone else who'd enjoy reading The Career Intelligencer, please pass it along.

It's your life, make the most of it :)

Take A Lesson

Got two hours? Get a quick lesson in getting ahead by watching Working Girl. Recently released on DVD, this film has long been one of my favorites. Always inspiring and entertaining, Working Girl can teach you some valuable business lessons in just one sitting.

Just in case you've never seen or heard of this movie, Working Girl is about Tess, an administrative assistant who's trying to edge her way onto the management track. Not surprisingly there are many obstacles in her path. Through a series of events, some quite humorous, Tess gets the opportunity to get into the game. The catch is, she needs to take a big chance to pull if off.

Besides being a wonderful vehicle for Melanie Griffith, in the leading role, Harrison Ford and Sigourney Weaver, Working Girl illustrates several principles of business success. Whether you're working for a large company or out on your own:

  • The right image helps you get your foot in the door
  • Who you know is as important as what you know
  • Getting ahead involves taking risks
  • You never know where your next great idea will come from
  • Choose your alliances wisely
  • Be ready, just in case opportunity knocks
  • Stepping on others will come back to haunt you

And maybe the most important thing: Never give up.

Next time you need some motivation, inspiration or just a small kick in the pants, stop by the video store and pick up Working Girl. You can learn a lot in just one rainy afternoon.

The State of Women in the States

By Annette Richmond

Did you know that Sunday, August 26th was Women’s Equality Day here in the States? Established in 1974 by Congress, Women’s Equality Day marks the day in 1920 when the 19th Amendment was ratified by 36 states and adopted to the Constitution. That’s the day women got the right to vote.

Contrary to popular misconception, the women’s movement did not begin in the 1960s. The first Women’s Rights Convention was held over 100 years earlier, July 19-20, 1848. The move towards equality, however, may have started in 1776 when Abigail Adams wrote to her husband, John, who was attending the Continental Congress in Philadelphia. In one letter, she asked that he, and the other men working on the Declaration of Independence, “remember the ladies.” According to One Hundred Years Toward Suffrage: An Overview, his response was “ the Declaration’s wording specifies that ‘all men are created equal.’”

Over the years, we’ve made great strides towards equality. Women can vote and own property. We can attend college. We’re even allowed to practice professions like medicine and law. But, despite many advances, we still have a long way to go. Read more

Making better connections

By Mariette Durack Edwards

Contrary to what many believe, networking events are not about pressing your business card into as many hands as you can. They are, however, great opportunities to learn about what other people are looking for. As you listen, you will find that what you offer may be exactly what the other person seeks.

A few years ago I was working with a woman who was an ordained minister. She had established a prayer ministry that she wanted to promote at an upcoming ministerial conference. In preparing for the event, she had created a brochure that outlined her ministry's mission. She planned to pass out as many of these brochures as possible at the conference. When she told me her strategy, I suggested she do something else. Read more
