Job Growth Expected For Q4 2014

Hiring for permanent and seasonal jobs expected during the fourth quarter according to CareerBuilder

CB Q4 2014Looks like employers continue to be in a hiring state-of-mind. Workers hoping to land a new position before the end of the year may have more opportunities to choose from according to CareerBuilder’s 2014 Fourth Quarter Job Forecast. Results of the national survey conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of CareerBuilder, indicate that nearly 30 percent of U.S. employers plan to add full-time permanent staff during the fourth quarter (up four percent from last year) and 25 percent plan to hire seasonal staff (including 43 percent of retailers).

“After experiencing incremental improvements over the past few years, the U.S. labor market is nearing a tipping point,” said Matt Ferguson, CEO of CareerBuilder. “The jobs outlook for Q4 is now more in line with pre-recession forecasts as employers cast a greater vote of confidence in both permanent and seasonal hiring. What’s also encouraging is that recruitment plans for small businesses with more than 50 employees are keeping pace with larger organizations. We’ll continue to see a spotlight on jobs and wages in the upcoming elections and beyond as we strive for an even stronger employment environment in 2015.”

CareerBuilder notes that in the third quarter of this year there was a significant increase in hiring compared to the same period last year with 34 percent of employers adding full-time permanent staff, up from 25 percent in 2013. Ten percent of employers reduced staff while 54 percent made no change at all.

During the fourth quarter, 29 percent of employers plan to hire full-time permanent staff, up from 25 percent last year. Nine percent of respondents say they intend to reduce head count, which is relatively unchanged from last year, and 57 percent expect to maintain the status quo.

Seasonal Hiring 2014

Almost half of retailers (43 percent) plan to take on seasonal help this year which is a four percent increase over last year. CareerBuilder notes that while retailers generally hire the most seasonal employees, this year companies across industries plan to hire additional staff for the holiday season.

Twenty-six percent of survey respondents said they plan to hire seasonal staff and 42 percent expect to transition some seasonal employees to permanent full-time positions.

Employers plan to pay seasonal workers more this year as well with 27 percent of employers saying they will increase wages and 13 percent anticipating a decrease. Sixty-three percent of respondents say they will pay seasonal workers $10 or more per hour while 19 percent will pay $16 or more.

While the majority of seasonal positions will be in customer service (40 percent), employers are taking on staff in other areas as well. Other seasonal positions employers are planning to fill this holiday season include:

  • Administrative/Clerical – 15 percent
  • Shipping/Delivery – 13 percent
  • Accounting/Finance – 12 percent
  • Inventory Management – 12 percent
  • Information Technology – 11 percent
  • Sales (non-retail) – 11 percent
  • Gift Wrapping – 10 percent
  • Marketing – 7 percent
  • Hosting/Greeting – 7 percent


Hiring By Region

Permanent and seasonal hiring is expected to increase across the United States during the fourth quarter. CareerBuilder found that the South is leading in terms of percentage of employers planning to add full-time permanent help, while the West is leading percentage-wise in terms of taking on seasonal employees. Here is the breakdown for expected hiring in the fourth quarter.

South – 33 percent Permanent Hiring, 25 percent Seasonal Hiring

West – 31 percent Permanent Hiring, 29 percent Seasonal Hiring

Northeast – 27 percent Permanent Hiring, 25 percent Seasonal Hiring

Midwest – 24 percent Permanent Hiring, 24 percent Seasonal Hiring
