Four Steps To Love Your Closet

Four steps to create a closet filled with clothes you’ll actually wear

love closetIf you need ideas of how to edit your wardrobe, so that you too can ’shop’ in your closet and not feel overwhelmed when you open your closet door or drawers, then take a look at these four steps to love your closet.

STEP #1 Take out and donate all your tops that are too short. Up until just about 2 years ago manufacturers made all tops on the short side. Remember the showing the tummy fashion phase? These short tops are not usually flattering or comfortable. They are however, taking up precious space in your closet.

Only keep the pullovers or button down tops that go past your waist. Chances are those are the only ones you will really wear and feel good in. So go ahead and get those shorties out of there!!!

Step #2: Review all your pants and skirts to see if any are too short for you now.

The best skirt length would be right below the knee. Anything too long or too short will most probably look dated and not be flattering. The skirts that fall into that category probably have not even been worn in years anyway, right?

The best pant length, for men and women would be long enough to not show your socks when standing. Too short pants make your legs look awkwardly short, visually widen your body, and well here is that description again, they look dated.

So how simple is this? Take out the tops, skirts and pants that are too short and you will see a huge difference. You’ll be able to find what you are looking for and create more outfits that you will be happy with.

Do you, or anyone you know have any jackets, tops or dresses that could have been worn in the show Designing Women on TV 1986 – 1993?

If the answer is yes, please read Step #3.

STEP #3: Remove any clothes that have shoulder pads from the 1980’s and 1990’s. There should be no excuses or hesitation regarding this step towards creating a closet filled with clothes you’ll actually wear, because you really never will wear these clothes with padded shoulders. And frankly, you shouldn’t.

Almost every closet that I have edited, has had clothes in it from the 80’s and 90’s taking up precious space, and are often kept as reminders of the way we were.

Let go of the past, so that getting dressed for the present will be easier and more flattering.

So now the final step, and an easy one……………drum roll please………

Step#4 If it is stained, has holes, or is in a non-flattering color or fit, then get it out of your closet or drawer! When you open your closet you should only have pieces in front of you that make you feel and look good. Use the same hangers for all your clothes and your closet will look bigger and more organized.

Nothing should take up space that cannot be worn, or is only there to remind you of times gone by, and/or if only I were that thin again. Sound familiar?

When you take the time to follow these simple steps, you will spare yourself many hours of trying to get thru the jungle of your closet to find clothes that will look good on you. You’ll also spend much less time putting back all the clothes you took out while trying to figure out what to wear.

After following these 4 steps on how you can edit your wardrobe, you will easily be able to go thru your closet and find the pieces that will be the foundation for you to build various outfits for different occasions
