Five Ways A Thank You Note Can Make You Memorable
A thank you note is one of the best ways to stand out
In any economy, competition for jobs is always highly competitive and job seekers need to make the most of every opportunity. When you’re going for your dream job It’s essential to stand out from the crowd.
So what can you do? Sending a thank you note is one of the quickest, and easiest, ways to get an employer’s attention. Here are five ways a thank you note can make you memorable after the interview is over.
- Send a thank you ASAP. Although most people know they should send a thank you note many don’t bother. Applicants who actually send a thank you note immediately stand out. Unless your handwriting is illegible you might want to follow up with a handwritten note as well. When was the last time you received anything besides a business letter in the office mail?
- Give them something new. Interviews are nerve racking. Often we forget to talk about our most important achievements. Now is your opportunity to bring up anything you didn’t mention during the interview, to highlight any accomplishments that are relevant to the job at hand.
- Talk about how you can contribute. Just like in school, many businesses have “extra curricular” activities. Perhaps you can write for the company newsletter or help organize the “lunch and learns.” Don’t miss the chance to reveal any extra talents you may have.
- Tell them why they should hire you. Now is your chance to elaborate on the projects and/or difficulties you discussed during the interview. Use a thank you note to explain how you can solve a problem or increase sales or whatever will make the employer consider you an asset. This shows initiative as well as interest.
- Send notes to everyone you met with. Often candidates are taken to meet several people at a company. Be sure to get business cards from each person so you can thank them individually. If you forget during the interview, call later to get the correct spelling of each person’s name. Most people sent a note only to the head honcho, remembering everyone really sets you apart.
Sending a thank you note is one of the most overlooked parts of the interview process. Many people think that saying thanks at the end of the interview is enough. Maybe it is. But, in today’s market you need to be more than “good enough.”
Make the most of every opportunity you have to market yourself. A well-written thank you note just might make the difference between a “thanks for coming in” and “when can you start?”
