We’ve all hear this saying, “You can’t get a job without experience. And you can’t get experience without a job.” So, when you want to change careers, what do you do? Fortunately there are several ways to overcome this hurdle.
Temp – Spending time as a temp gives you the opportunity to try on different positions and companies to see if you like them. (And they like you.) Some agencies have long-term positions and skills training available. Many work with large corporations which will look good on your resume and often have permanent positions available. This can be a good way for someone with experience to move into a new field.
Volunteer – Donating your time is a great way to gain experience. If you’re interested in the non-profit sector, it’s also one of the best ways to get a job. Often, volunteers are allowed to create their own part-time, flexible hours. Most organizations will have a variety of duties to choose from. This can be a good way to build skills and develop a portfolio for those trying to break into creative fields like writing or designing. Ask if your supervisor will give you a written reference.
Intern – Some organizations and education programs have internships available for students (some are paid, some are unpaid). Even if unpaid, these situations generally are more formal than volunteering on your own. Sometimes the hours and duties are pre-arranged by a school. This is good way to develop on the job skills and network in the field of your choice. Be certain that your supervisor will provide a written recommendation.
Part-Time – Say you’ve always considered going into restaurant management or becoming a writer. Don’t quit your day job. Try it part-time first. Get a job as a waiter or a salad chef. Write for the local free paper (you won’t get paid much here, but you will get those necessary clips).
